Kite: a toy consisting of a light frame with thin material stretched over it, flown in the wind at the end of a long string. Sail/Cover: The sail or cover of the kite is the front, the beautifully decorated part of a kite. Spars: The skeleton of a kite. Spars give support and shape to a kite.

  1. Kite: a toy consisting of a light frame with thin material stretched over it, flown in the wind at the end of a long string. Sail/Cover:The sail or cover of the kite is the front, the beautifully decorated part of a kite. Spars: The skeleton of a kite. Spars give support and shape to a kite. Tails: A streamer hanging from not only the bottom of a kite, but maybe from center points along the sides of the kite or wherever the kite might need added weight. Keels/Flaps: Keels and flaps are usually three or four sided geometric shapes attached to the kite cover, usually at the center, but can also be attached along the sides or at the bottom of the kite. Bridle lines/ Flying lines: Bridle lines are tied to a hole in a keel, or sewn into cover or pocket. The length of bridle lines depends upon the size of the kite and where it is connected to the kite. Bridle lines are usually connected to a kite in pairs for balance. Towing point: The tow ring or tow point is where the bridle lines and flying lines connect. Vents/Cells: Vents or holes are openings in the kite cover that allow winds to pass through the cells to help stabilize the kite and help the kite flyer keep the kite balanced as wind speed and strength vary.
