  1. Holmes was right! It is easy to make mistakes in this world and it is hard to forgive. In “The adventure of the Blue Carbuncle,” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, James Rider steals a precious stone called the blue carbuncle. He is caught by Sherlock Holmes, but Holmes shows him mercy and does not bring him to the police. Clearly, Holmes has made the correct decision by letting him go. One reason is that it was right to show mercy. Another reason is that the man who was falsely accused will still go free.

  2. Holmes Was Wrong • Sometimes it is very difficult to do the right thing. In “The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle,” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, James Ryder steals a precious stone called the blue carbuncle. He is caught by Sherlock Holmes, but Holmes lets him go and does not bring him to the police. Holmes has made a mistake and broken the law by letting him go. First, the thief has caused another person to experience a very hard time and should pay a consequence for his actions. Also, Sherlock Holmes has not lived up to his responsibilities as a detective.
