  1. Magnetism Breakout Session • Robust participation: • 25 attendees, 2 science talks, 4 contributed “short presentations”, more questions than time • Desire to have follow on workshop, 2 day duration (?); scheduling not defined • Science drivers: • nanoscale magnetism (devices, chemically-synthesized nanoparticles) • Dynamics on timescales from minutes / seconds down to ps and 100’s of fs (phase resolution) • Evolution of “engineered” materials (controlled damping, MTJs, interfaces) • Characterization of very thin (sub nm) layers / barriers & role of interfaces in nanoscale devices • “Macrospin” molecular magnets; quantum tunneling • Some systems (e.g Gd intermetallics) not suited to neutron measurements (Ames Lab) • Will x-rays be competitive w/ neutrons for characterization of magnetic structures? (trade x-section for flux) • collective modes of confined nanostructures & assemblies of magnetic nanoparticles • Desired capabilities: • element specific magnetometry • soft x-ray & IR interested in dynamics (probably hard x-ray as well) • Short bunches (< 20 ps and shorter) ideal; timing operations • good bunch-to-bunch phase stability • IR: large magnetic (10 T field & higher) for cyclotron resonance, FMR of insulating oxides • IR needs high stability (should be much better than current VUV ring) • Sub 100 nm spatial resolution (STXM, full field TXM, PEEM) • Detailed characterization of magnetic & crystal structures of nanoparticles (XRD, EXAFS, etc.) • In-situ interrogation of nanoparticle growth & assembly / direct study of nanoparticle oxidation • Lab-based characterization
