  1. Catholicism According to Catholic doctrine, Catholicism is the original Christian Church. Christianity is the True religion, and Catholicism is the true Christianity.

  2. St Peters Basilica • It’s the world’s largest Basilica of Christianity, nested into the heart of the Vatican city, with its 186 meters of length (218 if we consider the porch too), a height of 46 meters in the central aisle, a main dome 136 meter high and 42 meters large in diameter. The huge façade is 114 meters wide and 47 meters high. It has a surface of 22000 square meters and twenty thousand persons can pray in it.

  3. The Chief Commandments or Laws, of the Church • To assist at Mass on all Sundays and holy days of obligation. • To fast and abstain on the days appointed. • To confess our sins at least once a year. • To receive Holy Communion during the Easter time. • To contribute to the support of the Church. • To observe the laws of the Church concerning marriage.

  4. Catholic Belief • To gain the happiness of heaven we must know, love, and serve God in this world. Man must know, love and serve God in a supernatural manner in order to gain happiness of heaven. Man is raised to the supernatural order only by grace, a free gift of God. • We learn to know, love, and serve God from Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who teaches us through the Catholic Church. • In order to be saved, all persons who have attained the use of reason must believe explicitly that God exists and that he rewards the good and punishes the wicked; in practice they must also believe in the mysteries of the Blessed Trinity and the Incarnation. • By the Blessed Trinity we mean one and the same God in three divine persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. • By the Incarnation is meant that the Son of God, retaining His divine nature, took to Himself a human nature, that is, a body and soul like ours. • The Church is the congregation of all baptized persons united in the same true faith, the same sacrifice, and the same sacraments, under the authority of the Sovereign Pontiff and the bishops in communion with him. • We find the chief truths taught by Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church in the Apostles' Creed.

  5. Mary: Mother of God we say that she is the Mother of God in the sense that she carried in her womb a divine person—Jesus Christ, God "in the flesh" (2 John 7, cf. John 1:14)—

  6. Immaculate Conception and Assumption • Council of Ephesus • "We confess, then, our Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, perfect God and perfect man, of a rational soul and a body, begotten before all ages from the Father in his Godhead, the same in the last days, for us and for our salvation, born of Mary the Virgin according to his humanity, one and the same consubstantial with the Father in Godhead and consubstantial with us in humanity, for a union of two natures took place. Therefore we confess one Christ, one Son, one Lord. According to this understanding of the unconfused union, we confess the holy Virgin to be the Mother of God because God the Word took flesh and became man and from his very conception united to himself the temple he took from her" (Formula of Union [A.D. 431]). 

  7. Pope Francis greets the Pope Emeritus at Castel Gandolfo (CNS “Upon this rock I shall build my Church. The gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Mt. 16:18).

  8. What is the Papacy? • The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that the Roman Pontiff, head of the college of bishops, enjoys infallibility in virtue of his office, when as supreme pastor and teacher of all the faithful – who confirms his brethren in the faith – he proclaims by a definitive act a doctrine pertaining to faith and morals. • This infallibility is also present in the body of bishops when together with Peter’s successor they exercise the supreme magisterium in an ecumenical council (891 A.D.) • Vatican II stated that infallibility must be related to the faith of the whole Church, that there must be collegial cooperation between the pope and the bishops (Church III.22). It also states: “the whole body of faithful who have an anointing from the Holy One cannot err in matters of belief.” They too, have “a share in Christ’s prophetic office” (II.12).
