  5. Proposing Research

  6. Proposing Research • Document • Internal/External research • Importance The request for proposal (RFP) and research proposal The more inexperienced a researcher is, the more important it is to have a well-planned and adequately documented proposal. 6

  7. Proposing Research 7

  8. Request for proposal

  9. Request for Proposal • Definition • Government • Private firms Formal document issued by a corporate research department, a decision maker, or some other sponsor to solicit services from research suppliers. To publicly announce RFPs by law. May limit supplier invitations to bidders that they have solicited before, to vendors that have provided past services, or to a single bidder. 9

  10. Creating the RFP • Define the problem • Determine the vendors Internal experts, external experts Industry experience, reputation, geographic location, quality of previous work, size of staff, and strategic alliances. 10

  11. Creating the RFP • General components • Proposal administration information • Summary statement of the problem • Technical section • Management section • Contracts and license section • Pricing section 11

  12. Qualify Potential Suppliers 12

  13. Qualify Potential Suppliers 13

  14. General Components • Proposal administration • Summary statement of the problem 👉 👉 Overview of important information on the administration of the project. Abstract of the technical section. The form of a letter. 👉 Questions, date, Contactinformation. 👉 14

  15. General Components 15

  16. General Components • Technical section 👉 Describing the problem to be addressed and the technical details of each requirement. • Problem statement • Description of functional requirements (what actual phases will be included in the research) • Identification of constraints (what might limit research design creativity) Neither too specific nor too general 16

  17. General Components • Management section • Contracts and license section 👉 Implementation schedules, training and reporting schedules, quality control, and other documentation. Terms of payment and required benchmarks. 👉 Supplier qualification, references, documentationwebsites….. 👉 👉 The RFP is a part of final contract and thus should be worded precisely to avoid interpretation problems. 17

  18. General Components • Pricing section 👉 All cost of the proposal 👉 Ethical standards 18 1

  19. General Components • Format 19 1

  20. The Research Proposal

  21. The Research Proposal • Definition A proposal is an individual’s or company’s offer to produce a product or render a service to a potential buyer or sponsor. • Purpose • To present the management question to be researched and relate its importance • To discuss the research efforts of others who have worked on related management questions • To suggest the data necessary for solving the management question and how the data will be gathered, treated, and interpreted. 21 1

  22. Sponsor Uses • Assess Purpose, the clarity of design, background material, and the fitness for the project. • Benefit • The research goal has been achieved • Catalyst for discussion between the manager and the researcher 22 1

  23. Sponsor Uses 23 1

  24. Researcher Benefits • Benefit • Assess previous approaches and revise the research plan • Logic in assumptions, adequacy for the objectives • Guide throughout the investigation • Outline for the final research report • Gantt charts Work steadily toward the deadline. 24 1

  25. Types of Research Proposals • Internal proposal • External proposal • Complexity Done by staff specialists or by the research department within the firm. Sponsored by university grant committees, government agencies, government contractors, not-for-profit organizations, or corporations can be further classified as either solicited or unsolicited. • Exploratory studies • Small-scale studies • Large-scale studies 25 1

  26. Types of Research Proposals 26 1

  27. Types of Research Proposals 27 1

  28. Internal Proposals • Exploratory study • Small-scale study • Problem statement • Study objectives • Research design • Schedule • Executive • Problem statement • Study objectives • Research design • Schedule • budget 28 1

  29. External Proposals • Solicited or unsolicited • Important section • Objectives • Design • Qualifications • Schedule • Budget • Facilities and special resources 29

  30. Structuring the Research Proposal • Executive summary • Problem statement Brief statements of the management dilemma and management question, the research objectives/research question, and the benefits of your proposal. 👉 Management dilemma, background, consequences, and the resulting. 👉 👉 To understand quickly the trust of the proposal. Let managers distinguish the primary problem. 👉 30

  31. Structuring the Research Proposal • Research Objectives • Literature review Lay out exactly what is being planned by the proposed research. 👉 Examine recent(or history significant) research studies, company data, or industry reports that act as a basis for the proposed study. 👉 👉 Address the purpose of the investigation. Discuss how the literature applies to the study you are proposing; show the weaknesses or faults in the design. 👉 👉 Descriptive study, causal study 31

  32. Structuring the Research Proposal • Importance/Benefits of the Study • Research Design Sample, data, instrumentation, procedures, ethical. 👉 What you are going to do in technical terms. 👉 👉 👉 Describe explicit benefits that will accrue from your study. The importance of “doing the study now” should be emphasized. Important to the unsolicited external proposal. 32

  33. Structuring the Research Proposal • Nature and form of results • Data Analysis 👉 Contact an expert to review the latest techniques available for use in the particular research study. Specify the types of data to be obtained and the interpretations that will be made in the analysis. 👉 👉 Describe the proposed handling of the data and the theoretical basis for using selected techniques. Statistical conclusion, applied findings, recommendations…. 👉 👉 Dummy data 33

  34. Structuring the Research Proposal • Qualifications of Researchers 👉 • Begin with the principal investigator and provide similar information on all individuals involved with the project. • competence • Experience Subcontract specific research activities. 👉 34

  35. Structuring the Research Proposal • Budget 👉 Present in the form the sponsor requests 👉 • Internal research proposal • Employee and overhead costs 👉 • External research proposal • Person-hour price 35

  36. Structuring the Research Proposal • Schedule • Major phases • Exploratory interviews • Final research proposal • Questionnaire revision • Field interviews • Editing and coding • Data analysis • Report generation 👉 👉 Major phases of the project, timetables, and completion of a phase. 👉 Gantt chart, Critical path method (CPM) 36

  37. Structuring the Research Proposal 37

  38. Structuring the Research Proposal • Facilities and Special Resources • Project management 👉 • Master plan • The research team’s organization • Management procedures and controls for executing the research plan • Examples of management and technical reports • The research team’s relationship with sponsor • Financial and legal responsibility • Management competence 👉 👉 List the relevant facilities and resources that will be used. Show the sponsor that the research team is organized in a way to do the project efficiently. 38

  39. Structuring the Research Proposal • Bibliography For all projects that require a literature review, a bibliography is necessary. 👉 39

  40. Structuring the Research Proposal • Appendices Measurement Instrument 👉 👉 Glossary (Terms and definitions as well as acronyms ) 👉 Other (Any detail that reinforces the body of the proposal ) 40

  41. Evaluating the Research Proposal

  42. Evaluating the Research Proposal • Formal Competitive government, university, or public sector grants and large-scale contracts 👉 • Include • Development of review criteria, using RFP guidelines • Assignment of points to each criterion, using a universal scale • Assignment of a weight for each criterion, based on importance of each criterion • Generation of a score for each proposal, representing the sum of all weighted criterion 👉 42

  43. Evaluating the Research Proposal • informal 👉 👉 More qualitative and impressionistic • Not use a system of points and the criteria are not ranked • Neatness • Organization in terms of being both logical and easily understood • Completeness in fulfilling the RFP’s specifications, including budget and schedule • Appropriateness of writing style • Submission within the RFP’s timeline • Other factors 43
