DementiaWork: Image Campaign for Elderly Care in Finland

The Alzheimer Society of Finland conducted an image campaign to increase awareness and interest in dementia care among nursing students. The campaign included exhibitions, lectures, and collaboration with companies, municipalities, and associations in the elderly care sector. The campaign successfully attracted students and increased cooperation among participants.

Alzheimer Society of Finland • Established in 1988 to provide help and assistance for people with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers • A non-profit organization which is mainly funded by the Finnish Slot Machine Association • Image campaign for dementiawork in Finland Satu Kalliomaa 2009

Image of the dementiaworkin Finland • A national image campaign targeting the Practical Nurse students • Aim of the campaign was to increase the amount of students specializing in the care for the elderly • The long term goal was to get more qualified personnel into the elderly care in Finland Satu Kalliomaa 2009

  11. Results • 1230 students participated in the 9 events and 14 lectures • 669 of them filled a questionnaire • 139 companies took part in the exhibitions Satu Kalliomaa 2009

Conclusions • Bringing the field to the nursing schools is a good way to get attention to the elderly and dementia care • The local media was interested in the campaign: articles in newspapers and interviews in the local radio • The cooperation between different participants of the campaign was increased and new forms of cooperation invented • The good results brought new funding to the campaign for the years 2009 and 2010 from the Finnish Slot Machine Association Satu Kalliomaa 2009
