  2. TEAM Group in which people work interdependently toward a goal

  3. GROUP • May be simply a collection of people (EXAMPLE: group of people attending a movie or sporting event…there for a common purpose but not necessarily interacting or communicating with each other)

  4. GROUP • OR a WORK group that exists for a reason or purpose and has shared goals

  5. GROUP • A REAL group satisfies member’s physical and psychological needs to the extent that individuals are MOTIVATED to continue participation

  6. TEAM • Structured group of people working towards defined common goals that requires coordinated interactions to accomplish certain tasks (Forsyth, 1999) • Members must actively cooperate to achieves stated goals (Hayes, 1997)

  7. “GROUP” is a more inclusive term than “TEAM”

  8. Classifying Teams • Types of activities performed • Permanent • Temporary • Level of integration & coordination with the organization • Level of interdependence and internal specialization

  9. Types of Work Teams • Production(assembly line workers) • Service(maintenance/food service) • Management( administration/managers) • Project(research/engineering) • Action(entertainment) • Performing(sports/surgery)

  10. Organizing Work Groups • Traditional work group • Traditional team • Self-managing team
