  1. A case of bad management J.C. Penney Angela Barmann

  2. Meet ronjohnson • CEO of J.C. Penney from November 1, 2011 to April 8, 2013 • Previously worked for Apple where he led the company's highly successful retail store chain • Prior experience in developing new initiatives for branding, marketing and merchandising • Received his M.B.A. degree from Harvard and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stanford University.

  3. Johnson’s timeline at J.C. penney

  4. What employees of J.C. Penney thought: • There was no protocol or process • Direction of store changed frequently • Nothing was given in writing and there was not much detail given • The employees were not given insight to store changes and operations • There was no opportunities to ask questions

  5. What makes johnson a bad manager? • The employees did not trust him • He was too secretive • He did not know what the customers wanted • He did not test his new ideas before implementing them at the stores • By changing the make up of the store, adding boutiques and such, he changed the target market and alienated the people who used to always shop at J.C. Penney • He wanted to make J.C. Penney fun, like the Apple store, but people want to go there to shop – not hang out all day • He tried to dramatically change everything about the retailer, not just little changes at a time

  6. What could turn j.c. Penney around? • TRUST!! • Knowing what the customers want • Testing ideas before implementing them • Communicating with the employees • Targeting the right demographic • During a transition, make sure all employees understand what is going on; let them ask questions! • A good CEO – great management starts at the top and trickles down to the rest of the employees
