NGIs Status NGIs • EELA - Europe • Portugal and Spain: NGI already approved • EELA - LA • Argentine, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Venezuela: JRUs / e-Science initiatives constituted or in progress • About 50 members gathered by the LA JRUs (to be compared with the 90-ish EGEE-II members) • Problems anywhere: • Put people / institutions together • Overcome ego • Contact decision makers and politicians

Best Practices NGI CREATION BEST PRACTICES • Look for potentially interested institutions in the country • Start to set up JRUs / e-Science initiatives • MoUs already signed in Argentina, Colombia, Italy, Peru, Spain and Venezuela • MoUs on the way in Brazil, Chile and Portugal • Contact Decision Makers and Politicians • EELA-2 foresees 6 "Decision Makers Days" to address the problem of the NGI's and long term sustainability.

  5. Infrastructure Development NGI and INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT The Brazilian example EELA + Brazilian JRU drove infrastructure expansion ≈ 300 kEuro from Ministry of Science and Technology for the EELA e-infrastructure

  6. EGI RELATIONS with EGI EGI could / should help to 1- Build NGIs in Latin America 2- Set up the Latin American Grid Initiative (LAGI) Remember GÉANT2 and CLARA !!!!!!

  7. Industry RELATIONS with the INDUSTRY • No partner from industry in EELA, but • SMEs and Industrial applications in EELA-2, when (hopefully) approved …….
