  1. Reproductive System Elizabeth Rivada Mariana Santo Javier Garcia Noel Chavez

  2. FEMALE Description • Reproduction • Production of eggs - through ovulation - discharge of mature egg • Production of female sex hormones • Menstruation- shedding of the uterine lining; every 28 days; menstruation is not present when the woman is pregnant or is breast feeding

  3. Male Description • To produce, maintain, and transport sperm (reproductive cells) & protective fluid (semen) • To discharge sperm within the female reproductive tract during sex • To produce and secrete male sex hormones responsible for maintaining the male reproductive system

  4. female Reproductive Structures: INTERNAL: • Vagina • Cervix • Uterus • Fallopian Tubes • Ovaries EXTERNAL: • Labia Majora • Labia Minora • Clitoris

  5. female Reproductive Structures: INTERNAL: • Vagina-female organ;birth canal; a canal that connects the cervix to the vaginal orifice. • Cervix- narrow part of the uterus at the top end of the vagina. • Uterus- hollow organ where the fetus develops; two parts the corpus and cervix. • Ovaries- small glands that are on either sides of the uterus; the ovaries produce eggs and hormones; the fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus. • Fallopian tubes- narrow tubes or canals attached to the uterus that transport eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. • Urethra- tube that connects the bladder to the outside of the vagina; transports urine and in the male reproductive system it transports semen.

  6. female Reproductive Structures: EXTERNAL: • Labia majora- large outer lips; encloses and protects other reproductive organs; after puberty the labia majora is covered in hair. • Labia minora- small inner lips; are inside the labia majora; it surrounds the vaginal opening and the urethra. • Clitoris- where the labia minora lips meet; a sensitive lip that is responsive to stimulation.

  7. Conception and pregnancy The egg is released from the ovary and travels through the fallopian tube to the uterus where it waits to be fertilized by a sperm cell. If a sperm does not fertilize the egg menstruation happens. If the sperm cell penetrates the egg it will fertilize it . After 24 hours the fertilized egg begins to divide into many cells. After 3 weeks a little ball is formed and it is now called an embryo until the eighth week after the eighth week it is called a fetus. The fetus is in the womb for nine months and then the mother gives birth.

  8. male Reproductive Structures: INTERNAL: • Epididymis • Vas Deferens • Ejaculatory Ducts • Urethra • Seminal Vesicles • Prostate gland EXTERNAL: • Penis • Scrotum • Testicles

  9. female Reproductive Structures: INTERNAL: • Vas deferens- tube that goes from the epididymis to the pelvic cavity behind the bladder; transports sperm to the urethra. • Epididymis- twisted tube that lies behind the testis; transports and stores sperm cells. • Ejaculatory ducts- formed by the union of the seminal vesicle and vas deference; empty to the urethra. • Urethra- tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body; in a male the urethra also ejaculates semen. • Seminal vesicle- sacs that attach to the vas deferens near the bladder; produce fructose that give the sperm energy to move. • Prostate gland- structure located under the urinary bladder; makes another fluid for ejaculation; the urethra goes through the prostate gland.

  10. male Reproductive Structures: EXTERNAL: • Penis- male organ; used in sexual intercourse; a layer of skin called the foreskin covers the penis; the urethral opening is at the tip of the penis • Scrotum- sac of skin that lies behind the penis; contains the testicles • Testicles- oval organs that lie inside the scrotum; men have two testicles; they generate sperm and testosterone a male sex hormone.

  11. Diseases (Female) • Trichomoniasis: • is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasite. Symptoms in women include a green or yellow discharge from the vagina, itching in or near the vagina and discomfort with urination. It is diagnosed through a lab test examining vaginal and urethral fluid. • Cervical Cancer: • cancer that forms in the tissues of the cervix. This disease is mostly caused by the human papilloma virus which is acquired by sexual contact. Symptoms are not always noticeable but can include abnormal vaginal bleeding, bleeding or pain during sex and vaginal discharge with blood. Cervical cancer can be diagnosed through a pap smear or a biopsy; a sample of tissue. If caught early the cancer can be cured by chemotherapy or a hysterectomy.

  13. Diseases (male) • Testicular Cancer: • caused by the abnormal growth of cells in the testis. Testicular cancer mostly affects white males between the ages of 15 and 35. Testicular cancer can be caused by undescended testicle or a disease in which the make has more than one X chromosome and a family history of testicular cancer. Symptoms include a change in the size or shape of the testes or a heavy feeling in the scrotum. It can be diagnosed through a blood test or a CAT scan. It can be treated through the surgical removal of the testicles. • Gonorrhea: • It is caused by Neisseriagonorrhoeae and easily multiplied. This bacteria grows in the warm moist areas of the reproductive system. Symptoms include green or yellow discharge, burning, bleeding between periods and bloody discharge after sex. It is diagnosed with a swab sample from the urethra or cervix.

  15. Occupations • Obstetrician Gynecologist (OBGYN)- A physician or doctor that is specialized in pregnancy management, prenatal care and labor. A gynecologist also treats and diagnoses disorders of the female reproductive system. To become a OB/GYN you must have a high school degree, obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in biologyor chemistry, go to medical school and then do residency. The median salary is $300,600. • Urologist- A physician who diagnoses and treats conditions of the urinary tract and male reproductive systems. To become a urologist the education is the same as a physician, a bachelors, graduate medical school and residency. The median salary is $166,420. • Obstetrics and Gynecology Sonographer- Sonography is a medical procedure that uses ultrasound or sonogram to see organs, tissues or blood flow inside the body. This specialization in sonography focuses and evaluates only the female reproductive system. The median pay is around $30 an hour. Education for this career includes a high school diploma or a GED and a program for sonography that ranges around four years, depending on the specialty, to gain certification.
