  2. PBM is not • Self defence training • To be used without proactive strategies • Designed for use for with service user groups other than Learning Disabilities

  3. What is PBM • An evidence based Training Program endorsed by • B.I.L.D , N.A.S, D.F.E.S. D.O.H & conforming to N.I.C.E guidelines • A Holistic 3 stage approach to tackling Challenging / aggressive Behaviour • Exclusive to the Learning Disability community

  4. Trainers • In 2008 Five trainers from Blaenau Gwent were recruited & trained in PBM • All successfully re-accredited in 2009 –2010 & 2011 and will continue to have annual re-accreditation

  5. Who can access the Training • Training has been rolled out to all services in Blaenau Gwent that support individuals who have a learning disability • Social services staff from Respite, Community Options, Day Services and Supported Living are being trained • Private providers offering accommodation to adults with a learning disability

  6. Training formats • There are 2 types of training • 2 Day Theory and Practical • Half day annual refresher

  7. Course content –Day 1 Day 1 - Theory Topics covered • Historical Development • Introduction to Positive Behavioural Support and Challenging Behaviour • Understanding Aggressive Incidents • Primary Prevention of Aggression: Factors influencing Service User Behaviour

  8. Course content –Day 1 Day 1 (cont) • Secondary Prevention of Aggression: The Dynamics of Aggressive Incidents • Individualised Risk Assessment • The Rational for Reactive Strategies / Legislative Requirements • Post – Incident Management • Monitoring Reactive Strategies

  9. Course content –Day 2 Day 2 – Practical - Core Moves • Proxemics • Protective / Breakaway Techniques • Removal & Restraint, Where Needed

  10. Annual Refresher Why do we need refresher training? • Maintain skills • Update techniques • Increase staff confidence • Maintain minimum standards

  11. Employer / Manager Overview Course New 1day Course designed to give Managers & Employers of staff working within the Learning Disability community an insight into PBM and their obligations towards the Training

  13. Employers obligations • Register with ABM • Contractual requirement for LD services • Ensure referrals are sent • Respond Promptly to Training Invites • Release Correct staff for Correct Training • Try not to substitute staff members

  14. Any Questions? • Which course should I attend? • What would exclude me from being trained? • We don’t have any service users with challenging behaviour – do we need to be trained? • Can staff be trained in removals ‘in-case’ they support someone in the future that needs removals?
