  1. War Divides a Nation Unit 1 Chapter 1

  2. LEQ: How did differences between the North and South lead to growing tensions between the two regions? Target Skill – Main Idea and Details

  3. North vs. South • Urban way of life • Wanted higher tariffs • Many Northerners supported abolitionists and agreed that slavery should end. • Rural way of life • Wanted lower tariffs so they could continue buying goods from Great Britain. • Slavery was allowed in the South and valued by most Southerners

  4. States’ rights and slavery • States rights is the idea that states have the right to make decisions about issues that concern them. • North = free states – a state in which slavery was NOT allowed • South = slave states – one in which slavery WAS allowed. • Despite attempts to compromise , the struggle over slavery threatened to tear the United States apart.

  5. Other differences between the North and South. • Uncle Tom’s Cabin • Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852. • This novel described the cruel way slaves were treated. • Over 300,000 copies were sold and as a result many people joined the abolitionist cause. • John Brown’s attack on Harper’s Ferry, Virginia • He had led attacks on pro-slavery people in Kansas and made plans to attack slave owners in Virginia. • He needed weapons and planned to steal them from the army’s arsenal in Harpers Ferry, VA. • Brown and 21 other men raided the arsenal but were captured by soldiers. Brown was hanged for his crime. The struggle over slavery continued.

  6. How were these events related to the Civil War? Uncle Tom’s Cabin John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry • Stowe’s novel made people across the country aware of how terribly slaves were being treated. • As a result many more people became involved in the abolitionist movement. • Brown was captured and found guilty. He was hanged. This brought attention to the issue of slavery and people realized the struggle over slavery was growing. • Compromise between the North and South was becoming more and more difficult.
