  4. What do they do? Civil Engineer (Contracting) • Uses professional expertise to ensure that major building projects are constructed according to specifications agreed with client and/or consulting engineers. • Involves primarily with the implementation of the designs and plans on sites, and management of the labour force and materials, according to time and cost constrains. Civil Engineer (Consulting) • Responsible for planning, managing, designing and supervising the construction of a wide range of projects • Provides services and advice to clients on all aspect of civil engineering • May well specialise in certain types of projects such as transportation or water supply

Civil Engineer - Skills & personal qualities required • Work as members of a team and liaise with a number of different people including other engineers, sub-contractors, clients, quality surveyors and local authorities • Need to keep up-to-date with the latest materials, methods and techniques in design and construction • Use computer to calculate dimensions, produce accurate drawings, keep records and help plan the order in which work should be carried out • Need the ability to cope with and solve any problems or difficulties that my arise on-site
