  8. Veneration: Saint James is the Patron Saint of Spain and according to legend, his remains are held in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia (Spain)

  9. Pilgrimmage • The traditional pilgrimage to the grave of the saint, known as the "Way of St. James", has been the most popular pilgrimage for Western European Catholics from the early Middle Ages onwards. • 125,141 pilgrims registered in 2008 as having completed the final 100 km walk (200 km by bicycle) to Santiago to qualify for a Compostela. • In the 2004 Jubilee year, 179,944, pilgrims received a Compostela. • In the Jubilee years of 2010 and 2011, the number of pilgrims is expected to exceed this figure.

  10. Santiago Matamoros ("Saint James the Moor-slayer").

  11. The insignia of the Order of Santiago is a bright red cross simulating a sword and has the shape of a sphere on the handle and on the arms. The knights wore the stamp of the cross on their banners and on their white capes. • The cross on the banner had three insignias on it, one in the middle and one on each end of the arms. • The three fleurs-de-lis represent spotless honor (an honor of having defeated an enemy without spilling blood), which makes reference to the moral characteristics of the apostle St. James.

  12. The sword represents the knightly character of the apostle and refers his martyrdom, since he was decapitated by sword. It can also symbolize, in a certain sense, taking the sword in the name of Christ. • It is said that the form of the insignia originated during the crusade period, when the knights took small crosses with the bottoms sharpened to be able to nail them into the ground and carry out their daily devotions.

  13. Kongo • Saint James had a special place in the Central African Kingdom of Kongo . • Portuguese sailors and diplomats brought the stories about Saint James to Kongo when they first reached the country in 1483. • When King Afonso I of Kongo whose Kongo name was Mvemba a Nzinga, the second Christian king, was facing a rival, his brother Mpanzu a Kitima, in battle, he reported that a vision of Saint James and the Heavenly Host appeared in the sky, frightened Mpanzu a Kitima's soldiers, and gave Afonso the victory. • As a result, he declared that Saint James' feast day (25 July) be celebrated as a national holiday.

  14. Other Religions Muslim The Qur'an also speaks of Jesus's disciples but does not mention their names, instead referring to them as "helpers to the work of God". Muslim exegesis and Qur'an commentary, however, names them and includes James among the disciples.

  15. Acts 12:1-2 New International Version (NIV) 1 It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2 He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.

  16. The Acts of the Apostles 12:1 records that King Herod Agrippa I had James executed by sword. He is the only apostle whose martyrdom is recorded in the New Testament. He is, thus, traditionally believed to be the first of the 12 apostles martyred for his faith.

  17. Thanks for coming God bless you all.
