  2. Sample Design Brief Young people often have small personal items which they wish to keep close at hand. Design and make a decorative artefact to hold a number of such items. The design should be inspired by the natural beauty of wood and should celebrate the visual appearance of hand crafted joints. The artefact should be of pleasing proportions and be attractive in appearance. Underline key words

Finding out information • You must provide evidence that you have researched your project. • Printing a few pictures off of the internet helps but there is other stuff that needs to be included. • Answer all the questions asked in the Analysis of the brief. • Sketches of designs • Discuss measurements, materials, finishes, joints, shapes

  10. Sketches / working drawing • In this section you must include an elevation and plan and sometimes an end view of you project. The drawing has to be done to scale. • You must include some sketches of your project or sketches of parts of your project. • You must include a time plan of how you plan to use your time to make your project. • A cutting list must be included • A 3D view of the drawing in isometric or oblique can also be included.

Is it fit for purpose? • Do you like the look of your project? • If you had to do it again what would you change? • Did you have enough time to complete your project? Did you manage your time poorly? • Did you use the right materials? • Is it safe and stable?

  13. Fitness For Purpose - 20 Marks • Sample Design Brief • Young people often have a lot of clothes lying around their room. Design and make an item of furniture that will stop their mothers from giving out to them because of their untidy rooms so they have more time to play XBOX.

Demonstration of Skills • Pick something that suits your skill level. • Don’t pick something that will be too hard to make • Also don’t pick something that will be too easy to make. • Make sure you include some element of difficulty so that you can show case your skills. E.g. If you are good at wood turning include it somewhere or if you are good at making the mortise and tenon joint try to factor that in.

Finishing • Make sure curves, chamfers and so on are well sanded. • Get rid of all pencil lines • Apply a few coats of varnish, danish oil or wax. • Make sure the project has a nice shine on it when finished. • The finish will also effect the marks given in the overall appearance of the project. • This is a very important step.

  27. Overall Appearance 20 – Marks This is how nice the project looks when its finished. Is it appealing to the eye and is it well made. Has it been well finished.
