  1. Class 201 Presentation Our Visit to the American Indians Museums

  2. What we learned on our field trip to the Children's American Indian’s Museum • We learned that many thousands of years ago the Indians had to grow their own vegetable and fruits. They had to hunt for their food by using a fish net to catch fish. They had to use a bow and arrow to hunt for meat.

  3. What were the names of their homes they built? • 1. Teepee

  4. And the other house they built was called: • 2. Wigwam

  5. What was a clan? • A clan was often families from a common ancestor that formed groups.

  6. The most widespread clan symbols painted on their clothing or carved on their possessions. • Raven • Eagle • Bear • Wolf and • Beaver

  7. What is a Totem Pole? • A totem pole is a wooden column carved using a stone ax called an adze. The animal figures represent family clans.

  8. What did they eat? • They ate fish life: • Sea mammals • Shellfish • Salmon • Cod • Herring • halibut

  9. They also ate the following: • Berries • Roots and • Other vegetables

  10. Tribal Groups of the Northwest: • Tlingit (Cling-it) • Tsimsian (Chim-she-an) • Haida (Hide-a) • Kakiutl (Kake-e-u) • Salish (Say-lish) • Nootka (Nut-ka)

  11. The Tlingit • They live along the coast of Alaska. • They were famous for being merchants who traded goods between the island tribes.

  12. Tsimsian • They live near the valleys of the Nass and Skeena Rivers in British Columbia. • They made cooper tools

  13. In Conclusion • These are the different things we learned from our visit to the Children’s Native American Museum in Manhattan. • After the puppet show, we were allowed to eat lunch and go inside the real Teepee. It was very nice. We had a good time on our trip and learned many new things.
