  2. Demograhic… • Land area: 702 km/271 sq.miles • 1,800 miles (2,900 km) • 607 small islands • 4 states of the federation • Population: 115,402 (2010) • PWD: expected at 11,000 • SWD age 3-21: 1,825 (SY11-12)

Very small, but… Share CRPD Purpose (Article 1) To promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity FSM National Policy on Disability (Intent/Purpose) To address the needs of all persons with disabilities in the four states of the Micronesia, to identify priority areas for action in order to promote a more ‘inclusive’ society, create greater awareness of the needs of persons with disabilities and improve the delivery of services.

Inclusive education • Compulsory education ages 6-14 (grades 1-8, 1970s) • Special education mandated by law (P.L. 8-21, 1993) • Students with disabilities will be identified and placed in least restrictive learning environments (general education classrooms with their peers) • Interagency Agreement (1993) • FSM C.R.16-09 (2009) (National policy on disability) • Signed CRPD Dec. 2011

NEXT Steps… • Technical assistance: staff development, training material, related resources. • Community of support (with advent of technology) • Donation of surveyed equipment/hand downs • Drafting of policies (ensure commitment of leadership and other stakeholders) • Expansion of social services/partnership of education, health and other departments (ministries), inclusive of DPOs and other non-profit organizations.
