  1. Term to Know Aerobic activities Continuous activity that requires large amounts of oxygen. Your Heart, Lungs, and Circulation The word aerobic means “with oxygen.” Done regularly, aerobic activity strengthens the heart and the lungs.

  2. Term to Know Circulatory system Consists of the heart, blood, and blood vessels. Your Circulatory System To understand how aerobic activities work, you need to have some knowledge of the circulatory system, also called the cardiovascular system. This system is responsible for circulating blood throughout the body.

  3. Your Circulatory System The heart is the main organ of the circulatory system. • The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen and rids itself of carbon dioxide. • The left side of the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body.

  4. Term to Know Hemoglobin An iron-rich compound in the blood that helps carry the oxygen. Your Circulatory System The blood carries oxygen via hemoglobin.

  5. Term to Know Stroke volume The amount of blood pumped per beat of the heart. Your Circulatory System When at rest, the heart beats an average of 72 times per minute. Your heart rate and stroke volume increase during strenuous physical activity.

  6. Your Circulatory System Blood is carried to and from the heart via a network of blood vessels. There are three types of blood vessels: arteries, capillaries, and veins.

  8. Term to Know Capillaries Smaller blood vessels that deliver oxygen and other nutrients to individual cells. Your Circulatory System Capillaries are blood vessels that carry blood throughout the body.

  9. Term to Know Veins Blood vessels that deliver blood back to the heart. Your Circulatory System Veins are blood vessels that deliver blood from the capillaries back to the heart via the lungs.

  10. Term to Know Respiratory system The body system that exchanges gases between your body and the environment. Your Circulatory System The oxygen that your blood carries is introduced into your body by means of your respiratory system.

  11. Your Circulatory System The principal organ of your respiratory system is your lungs. Your lungs exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide through the process of respiration.

  12. Term to Know Diaphragm A muscle found between the chest cavity and abdomen. Your Circulatory System Unlike the heart, the lungs are not a muscle. Rather, they get their power from the diaphragm, the intercostal muscles around the ribs, and the abdominal muscles in the lower stomach area.

  14. Term to Know Cardiorespiratory endurance The ability of the body to work continuously for extended periods of time. Your Circulatory System One long-term result of regular physical activity is cardiorespiratory endurance.

  15. Term to Know Lifestyle diseases Diseases that are the result of certain lifestyle choices. Problems and Care of Your Heart and Lungs Heart disease, lung cancer, and other illnesses of the circulatory and respiratory systems are sometimes referred to as lifestyle diseases.

  18. Term to Know Atherosclerosis A condition in which a fatty deposit called plaque builds up inside arteries, restricting or cutting off blood flow. Atherosclerosis is linked to a person’s cholesterol levels.

Risk factors include cigarette smoking and type 2 diabetes, which frequently occurs in overweight people.

  28. Term to Know maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) The largest amount of oxygen your body is able to process during strenuous aerobic exercise. Influences on Cardiorespiratory Endurance Fitness experts generally measure cardiorespiratory endurance in terms of maximal oxygen consumption, or VO2max.

  31. Factors Affecting Cardiorespiratory Endurance Your genetic makeup affects both your initial levels of cardiorespiratory endurance and your capacity to improve it. An individual’s ratio of slow- to fast-twitch muscle fibers can make a difference is his or her fitness level.

  32. Term to Know Slow-twitch muscle fibers Muscle fibers that contract at a slow rate. Factors Affecting Cardiorespiratory Endurance Found in higher proportion in long-distance runners, slow-twitch muscle fibers are associated with greater muscle endurance and an increased ability to do aerobic work.

  33. Term to Know Fast-twitch muscle fibers Muscle fibers that contract rapidly, thus allowing for greater muscle strength. Factors Affecting Cardiorespiratory Endurance Fast-twitch muscle fibersare found in greater proportion in weight lifters. They have little bearing on aerobic levels.

  38. Term to Know Anaerobic activity Activity that requires high levels of energy and is done for only a few seconds or minutes at a high level of intensity. Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Physical Activities Aerobic activity must occur over a sustained period of time; anaerobic activity works differently.
