  2. Agenda • Internet Availability Challenges • The Solution • Case Studies • ROI with LinkProof • Summary and Q&A

  3. Challenges

  4. Link Availability Challenges September 2005 Katrina Hurricane wiped out most telecom facilities in the hardest-hit Gulf areas. Some carriers could only keep data and voice services up and running until generator fuel ran out. November 2005 Two fiber cuts to Cogent’s network (Houston-Tampa, Philly-Washington D.C.) left all of the ISP’s customers without connectivity for 4 hours. August 2004 An act of vandalism leaves many of British Telecom’s Internet customers without service for over 24 hours. December 2004 Global Access Points accidentally disconnected cables in Chicago that left Notre Dame University with no connectivity for 4 hours. October 2005 Level-3 cut its peering connection with Cogent after failing to resolve a business dispute. February 2008 Tele2.fr an ISP in France was down for days. “Cost associated with service provider outages alone is$151K annually, the single largest source of downtime cost (24%)...Small-medium sized businesses suffered an average of 19 hours of ISP downtime + 9 hours of service degradation.” – Infonetics Research, March 2006 “Cost associated with service provider outages alone is$151K annually, the single largest source of downtime cost (24%)...Small-medium sized businesses suffered an average of 19 hours of ISP downtime + 9 hours of service degradation.” – Infonetics Research, March 2006

  5. Challenge: Maximizing Bandwidth Investments • A DSL line costs $200/month on average • A T1 line costs $1K/month on average • A T3 line costs $10K/month on average • The price of backup lines • DSL line used for backup purposes is $200 X 12 = $2,400/year • A T1 line used for backup purposes = $12K/year • A T3 line used for backup purposes = $120K/year Lines that are used only for backup purposes are similar to car insurance – you can’t get a ROI on them unless you use them !

  6. How can I redirect similar traffic? (HTTP for download / HTTP for SAP) How can I assure critical traffic is routed over high SLA lines? How can I scale my connections? Add more high SLA lines? Challenge: Business-Oriented Scalability Internet WAN Headquarter Local Network HTTP for Web browsing Corporate users No SLA Routers High SLA 99.99% ERP, CRM, email, Web servers HTTP for ERP / CRM Page 6

  7. Summary of Challenges • Internet connectivity can be a single point of failure • Single connection • Single ISP • Inability to maximize bandwidth investments • Idle, redundant lines for disaster recovery • Inconsistent performance and response time • Potential performance bottle necks, results in an inability to guarantee SLAs • Performance degradation equals downtime • Lack of business-oriented bandwidth scaling • Inability to direct traffic to links by user-defined policies based on application type, priority, availability, and price

  8. The Solution

  9. Introducing Radware LinkProof LinkProof®, Radware’s business-smart multi-WAN solution provides maximum multi-link availability, business-oriented link performance optimization and link security policy enforcement.

  17. Case Studies

  18. Case Study: Large Wholesale Bank Customer Overview • Largest wholesale bank in New England for housing finance, cooperatively owned by more than 460New England financial institutions, provides access to wholesale credit for its member banks and other qualified borrowers. • Has 2 Internet access points from two different (ISPs): a multiple T1 line from AT&T and a 100Mbps line from Cogent. It also has an additional T1 AT&T line dedicated to its DR site. The primary site and the DR site are connected to each other by a T3 lease line (Clear Channel). Business Need • The bank offers financial services via the Internet and provides additional critical business applications for its members, processing millions of dollars per week. Its goal was near 100% uptime for these critical e-commerce applications and to provide fast, consistent Internet access. • It also planned to expand its member base; network and Internet availability would need to support this growth. Needed HA load balancing between the primary site and its DR site to enhance its e-commerce performance and reliability, with automatic failover to the DR site.

  19. Large Wholesale Bank Configuration DR Site “Now adding bandwidth can be done in an easy and cost efficient manner…Radware’s LinkProof eliminates all of the complexities of multi-homing design providing a single, easy to manage appliance that intelligently utilizes all Internet links optimally.” – Linda Murawski , Manager, Network Infrastructure Services ISP1 ISP2 ISP3 Multiple T1 Internet Connection AT&T 100Mbps Cogent T1 Internet Connection AT&T Switch Switch LinkProof LinkProof LinkProof Firewall Firewall Firewall Web Servers Application Servers Web & Application Servers

  20. Case Study: Patagonia Customer Overview • Patagonia, Inc. (http://www.patagonia.com) is a high end outdoor clothing retailer with retail stores located throughout the U.S., Europe, South America and Japan. Patagonia.com, is home to the company’s corporate site, online shopping portal and environmental action initiatives. • The site has over 25,000 visits daily; 50,000 during the holiday season/ special promotions. Business Need • Web site was hosted by a provider at a co-location center with 1 source for Internet Connectivity. Patagonia was leasing equipment and renting bandwidth and wanted to bring the site in-house. • As site traffic increased, Patagonia began incurring exorbitant fees. In addition, when the single line went down, so did Patagonia’s revenue and customer service, which occurred during an aggressive sales promotion. • After evaluating several alternatives, Patagonia chose Radware’s LinkProof over other vendor solutions, including F5’s Link Controller.

  21. Patagonia Configuration “Radware’s LinkProofs have the capacity to handle more traffic than we can foresee for many years to come.” – Greg Sherrow,Web Technical Manager, Patagonia ISP1 ISP2 Switch LinkProof LinkProof Firewall Firewall Web Servers

  22. LinkProof ROI

  23. Cost of Downtime & Active-Backup Links • Large company with single data center in the HQ • The data center has two Internet lines: • Active T3 – flat rate of $3K per month for 45Mbps* • Backup DSL – flat rate of $500 per month for 6Mbps* • Total required BW per month is 5Mbps • By introducing a pair of LinkProof devices, it is possible to switch to a connectivity solution which: • Allows both lines to be active. • Has zero downtime. • Offers business-oriented scalability. • Provides a total potential BW which is higher than current connectivity solution. • If an ISP fails, total active BW matches potential BW. • The prices of connectivity are examples only and may vary between regions Page 26

  25. Cost of Downtime – Enterprise with Branches • Large online retail company with 1 data center and 3 manufacturing facilities: • The data center has a T3 internet line - flat rate of $3K per month up to 44Mbps* • Each branch has a T1 internet line - flat rate of $1K per month up to 1.5Mbps* • Company yearly revenue is $140M • Total cost of yearly downtime - $1.4M** • Cost of yearly downtime of the data center - $1.26M • Cost of yearly downtime per facility due to loss of employee productivity - $140K • By introducing LinkProof devices, it is possible to switch to a connectivity solution which has a lower cost and higher scalability: • In the data center – 2 active T3 lines from 2 ISPs – total cost is $6K • In each facility – 2 active lines (one T1 and one DSL) from 2 ISPs – total cost $1.5K • The solution provides link HA and scalability for the data center and all branches * The prices of connectivity are examples only and may vary between regions ** Infonetics research 2006 Page 28
