  2. NPSS Conference Recruitment • Over three decades, the typical NPSS population in January of each year has hovered around 3000 (+/- 200) members. This past year it changed. • The IEEE membership year begins in September and ends in August. The population on 31 August is made the basic IEEE reference point. • The fall-off in membership at the end of February each year is measured against the August level. • The 1 March NPSS level is typically about 20-25 % less than that of the preceding September level.

  4. NPSS Conference Recruitment • NPSS population in a given year depends upon: • 1. Random recruitment. (about 1/3 of total) • 2. Conference specific recruitment. • a. This specific depends upon the number of conferences scheduled during the year and the setup of a recruitment booth • b. Some years, only 3 conferences were held. In 2009, recruitment at eight conferences took place and a bountiful recruitment resulted.

  7. NPSS Conference Recruitment • 31 December marks the end date for the annual renewal of each person’s membership in IEEE. A grace period lasting until 28 February is provided as an aid to help those tardy renewers. In this grace period, those people are listed as in “Pre-Arrears”. If they then fail to renew by the 28th, all IEEE benefits are removed and the person is then in “Arrears”. Some in arrears are recovered and have their benefits restored. If those in arrears do not renew in a three year period, they then become “Inactive”. Some people may even resign their membership in IEEE. • A sharp fall-off in membership occurs on 28 February. That is the date for the “Terminator”.

NPSS Conference Recruiting • The population of NPSS at the end of Dec 2009 was………………3672, an increase of 361 or 10.9% over the same date in 2008. • At the end of February 2010, the population had abruptly fallen to 2761, a delta of 835. This number of people is in arrears. • Note that the reference datum, Aug 2009 population was 3364. Therefore the “churn’ is 835/3364 or 25%, typical for most societies in IEEE.

  9. NPSS Conference Recruitment • Recruiting at NPSS conferences has four aspects: • 1. Awards and subsidies for student attendance at conferences. • 2. NPSS paid subsidies for recruit membership in IEEE • 3. IEEE paid subsidies for recruit membership in NPSS (not for students) • 4. NPSS paid subsidies for IEEE members to join NPSS.

NPSS Conference Recruitment • IEEE dues at summer conferences are half of the amount collected for fall conferences. • -----Summer Conferences----- • NPSS practice has been to subsidize the full amount of the summer IEEE dues for both regular and for student recruits. • IEEE pays the NPSS dues for Regular recruits. • NPSS pays those NPSS dues for student recruits. • NPSS pays the NPSS dues for IEEE “Add-Ons”

  11. NPSS Conference Recruitment • ----Summer Conference Examples---- • Regular recruit from the USA: • IEEE dues = $175/2 = $87.50 • NPSS dues= $35/2= $17.50 • Student recruit from the USA: • IEEE dues= $32/2= $16 • NPSS dues=$18/2= $9 • (European recruit dues= $147/2=$73.50)

NPSS Conference Recruitment • ----Fall, Winter Conference Examples---- • Regular recruit from the USA: • IEEE dues = $175 less $50 (NPSS) = $125 • NPSS dues= $35 (paid by IEEE) • Student recruit from the USA • IEEE dues = $32 • NPSS dues= $18 (paid by NPSS) • (Recruit payments are “stored” at Reg.   13. NPSS Conference Recruitment • Improvement in the retention, especially of “first-year” members (of whom about 50% fail to renew), IEEE is launching several programs to attract their renewal. Some of these are: • 1 Now available about 200 e-books from Wiley as Xplore chapters (pre-2007) free to IEEE. • 2. IEEE-tv 2.0 now available with 125 videos. Pilot will screen Conference presentations. • 3. For 1st year renewal, IEEE offers 4 classes from “Stuff You didn’t learn in Eng. School
