  2. ON-DEMAND #1: SPEECH PROMPT: In the documentary film, Blood Brother, Rocky Braat stumbles across an AIDS orphanage in Chennai, India. After falling in love with the abandoned children, Rocky devotes his life to take care of them and help them in their battle to fight this terrible disease. Although the film shines light on the struggle to fight AIDS in India, many people in America don’t see the disease as a real threat because it has been contained in the United States. Despite this, AIDS is still devastating parts of the world where access to medicine is limited. Because of the film and Rocky’s efforts, a fund has been started to raise money for AIDS awareness and to specifically help the children of the orphanage. TASK: Write a speech to be given to the United Nations that argues the importance of raising funds for AIDS research. Be sure to include examples from the film about the impact of AIDS around the world and specifically how fundraising money would be used to help the cause. *United Nations- an organization of independent states formed in 1945 to promote international peace and security.

  3. Know Your Audience • Your speech must be geared towards your audience! • In this case, the audience is the United Nations, a very formal and professional group. • Make sure to directly address the group at the beginning of your speech.

Characteristics of Speech-Writing • Rhetorical Question • Used for emotional appeal, not to elicit a specific answer • EX: “Don’t you want to see a world without AIDS?” • Repetition of Key Ideas • Repeating main points for emphasis • Parallel Structure • Helps organize ideas and makes the writing easier to understand • EX: “I Have a Dream” Speech • Directly Addressing Audience • Adds a personal touch and elicits engagement from audience • Figurative Language

  5. Speech Structure: Introduction • Use elements of the prompt to build your intro. • The last sentence of the introduction is your thesis statement. • SUBJECT: The United Nations • POSITION: Needs to provide additional funding to help AIDS victims in India and around the world • HOW? or WHY?

Speech Structure: Body Paragraphs • This is your evidence: How would additional funding help AIDS victims in India and around the world? • Make sure to connect these statements to your thesis statement in intro. • Use examples from the movie! • Analyze or further develop the importance of these funds on AIDS awareness, research and treatment. • At least two body paragraphs are necessary here.

  7. Speech Structure: Conclusion • Circle back to the main ideas from the introduction. • Answer the “So what?” question for the audience. • Remind them just how important your request for funding is and issue a call to action. • Restate the thesis.

  8. ON-DEMAND #2: LETTER PROMPT: In the documentary film, Blood Brother, Rocky Braat stumbled across an AIDS orphanage in Chennai, India. Despite having little money, Rocky gave up everything to take care of these children and to raise awareness of their struggle to fight the terrible disease. Rocky is a self-described “lost soul” of sorts who felt like he didn’t belong anywhere in this world until he fell in love with the abandoned children in the orphanage. However, despite his efforts, many of the townspeople still shunned Rocky and the children because the discussion of AIDS is considered taboo (unmentionable, or unwanted). TASK: Write a letter to Rocky thanking him for his efforts to work with the children in the orphanage. Be sure to include specific examples of how his work is impacting the children’s lives and even your own. Tell Rocky what life lessons you have learned from his experiences and how you will use his work in India to make a difference in your own family, school, town, or state.

  9. Know Your Audience • This is a letter TO Rocky. • Please include a proper letterhead: • Your name, address & date in top left hand corner • Followed by Rocky Braat’s name and address • Start letter with “Dear Mr. Braat,” • This letter WILL be sent to Rocky in India.

  10. Letter Structure: Introduction • Open up with 2-3 introduction sentences. • Use elements of the prompt. • End the paragraph with your thesis statement. • Why do you want to thank Rocky? AND • How has the video impacted your life? • Thesis needs to be ONE sentence at end of intro.

Letter Structure: Body Paragraphs • This is your evidence: Why do you want to thank Rocky and how has the video impacted you? • Make sure to connect these statements to your thesis statement in intro. • Use examples from the movie! • At least two body paragraphs are necessary here. • At least one body paragraph should be devoted to thanking him for evidences witnessed in film. • At least one body paragraph should be devoted to how the video has impacted your life.

  12. Letter Structure: Conclusion • Sum up your thoughts. • Restate your thesis. • Make sure to sign the letter appropriately!

  13. ON-DEMAND #1: PROPOSAL PROMPT: In the documentary film, Blood Brother, Rocky Braat becomes a mentor and caregiver to children living in an AIDS orphanage. The orphanage is within an impoverished part of India that lacks basic luxuries including running water, heating and air conditioning, as well as clean food prep facilities and sleeping quarters. TASK: After viewing the film, identify a challenge that the orphanage faces (plumbing, sleeping quarters, food prep, delivery of medicine, etc) and propose a solution to this challenge by designing a system to correct and alleviate it. Be sure to provide specific evidence from the film as to why this is a challenge for the orphanage and how your design/system will solve the problem.

  14. Know Your Audience • This is a formal essay to a company or an investor who could help with your design and/or implementation of that design. • Pretend that this person does not have knowledge of Rocky or India.

  15. Proposal Structure: Introduction • Introduce the reader to Rocky and India. • Remember to use elements from the prompt in your introduction. • The last sentence of the introduction is your thesis statement. • SUBJECT: What is the need? • POSITION: How will you fix it? • What will this do for the people?

  16. Proposal Structure:Body Paragraph #1 • Explain the problem you are trying to fix. • Use evidence from the movie to support your explanation of the problem. • Analyze the problem and evidence. • Why is there a need? • Why is this need important to be addressed?

  17. Proposal Structure:Body Paragraph(s) #2+ • Explain how your solution will meet the need. • Use evidence from the movie to support how your solution will work. • If you have evidence from other situations where this solution has worked, provide that as well. • Analyze the solution and evidence. • How will this work? • Why is it important?

  18. Proposal Structure: Conclusion • Sum up your thoughts. • Restate your thesis. • There is no need to sign a proposal; that step is is too informal for this type of writing.

  19. Proposal Structure:Addendums • Make sure to include all necessary documents as addendums (or additions) to your formal piece of writing. • Diagram of solution • List of materials • Timeline • Plan of Project
