Of mice and men and trillium: cascading effects of forest fragmentation Ecological Applications 2003. 13(5):1193-1203
Can timber harvesting influence survival of Trillium populations? • Population density of Trillium in clearcuts and along forest edges similar to density reported for the study area in 1949, prior to initiation of timber harvesting. • However, the age of individual plants growing in the clearcuts were found to exceed the age of the clearcut. This indicates that no recruitment has occurred since the site was logged. • Trillium plants growing in the clearcuts and along forest edges produce lots of seed each year. • Why no recruitment?
