  1. SUCRALFATE AS A ADJUVANT IN POST-TONSILLECTOMY PAIN MANAGEMENT Dr Anand Associate Professor Dr Poorna chandran Senior Resident Dr Dhinakaran Daniel Post graduate Department of Anaesthesiology Meenakshi Medical College & Research Institute

  2. AIM OF THE STUDY • Study the effect of Sucralfate as adjuvant in post operative pain management of Adeno- Tonsillectomy

  3. Sucralfate • It is mucosal protective agent • It is Aluminum sucrose sulfate used in treating GI ulcers • It selectively binds to Necrotic ulcer tissue and forms a protective coat • It brings down the pain by this coat and Promotes faster healing of the ulcer

  4. CRITERIA • ASA I CHILDREN • AGE GROUP 7-14 Years • TWO GROUPS -GROUP P-RECEIVING PARACETAMOL -GROUP S-RECEIVING PARACETOMOL + SUCRALFATE

  5. Methods & Materials • Post operatively all patients were given paracetamol suppository • oral paracetamol given after starting oral diet • In group S in addition to this the patients are asked to swish and swallow 5 ml of Sucralfate

  6. Observation • The analgesic requirement is noted • Use of rescue analgesic is also noted • The same surgeon observed the healing in both groups on 2, 3, 5, 7th post op day

  7. Observation… • The pain is analysed with behaviour analysis and from parents

  8. Analysis The intensity of pain in both group is analysed The total analgesic requirement is also noted Healing is analysed by the surgeon .

  9. Results • Group S has reduced postoperative pain, analgesic requirement. • The recovery of normal activity and normal diet was also earlier, than the Group P • The percentage of mucosal coverage of Tonsillar fossa was significantly faster in Group S.

  10. Conclusion • Use of sucralfate in swish and swallow technique definitely improves post operative healing and brings down post tonsillectomy pain

  11. REFERENCES • Pain in infants and childrens-NEIL L.SCHECHTER,CHARLES B,BERDE,MYRON YASTER • Freeman SB, Markwell JK. Sucralfate in alleviating post-tonsillectomy pain Laryngoscope2006 • McCarthy DM. Sucralfate. New Engl J Med 1991; 325: 1017-1025
