  1. AP World History Overview What to expect this year and how to be successful- This is the equivalent of a college-level course, it will be rigorous but manageable with hard work.

  2. Textbook • You should have checked out the AP textbook “Traditions and Encounters”. It is your responsibility to keep it in good condition, do not write or highlight in it or bend the pages. These are brand new and are expected to be returned at the end of the year. • I intend on having you keep the textbook at home for the most part, however for the first couple weeks, I want you to bring it to school daily so we can practice note taking. • There is a website that you can access for Textbook resources http://glencoe.mheducation.com/sites/0024122010/index.html • You can also find more information about AP courses on http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/Controller.jpf

  3. Reading and Notes • You will have required weekly reading from your textbook which is crucial to understanding the application of knowledge in class. • You are expected to take notes from your reading, in which you may use for weekly reading quizzes- as long as they are your own and hand written. You will not be able to use notes for end of unit tests. • Everything is done in the Notebook (I will be reviewing organization) therefore it must be brought to class everyday. • There are outlines on the textbook website which may guide you to take notes but it will not be graded if copied. We will learn how to take Cornell Notes and practice to get the hang of it.

  4. How you will be graded • Weekly quizzes, notes and graphic organizers, analyzing sources, notebook checks, essay writing, and end of unit tests make up the majority of points • Tests will be hard! Especially in the beginning and many students fail. But you must look at it like an athlete playing a sport or musician with an instrument- most do not try the first time and do amazing- it takes practice, hard work and commitment. (Also a 50% like making the cut off for a 3) • There will be many ways to keep your class grade up such as completing bellwork (TWEDYs), keeping the notebook up to date, and finishing assignments • In addition to the AP Exam in May, you will take a midterm and final that I create for the class.

  5. Helpful hints • Always check my website for upcoming due dates and assignments and make sure to write things down in your agenda • Keep up to date with current events, check out news sites like CNN and PBS • There are tons on videos on youtube relative to what we learn to give you some extra help- check out Crash Course with John Green and CNN Millennium Index for videos about every topic • Don’t forget- I’m here to help! We can make arrangements to meet before or after school to review anything you need help with. • I also suggest having a study buddy from class to help with understanding.
