TAMDAR - Tropospheric Airborne Meteorological Data Reporting • Objective: • Develop means to expand automated airborne in-situ weather reporting • for altitudes below 25,000 ft. • FY 2003 Accomplishments: • Conducted sensor system flight tests on Naval Postgraduate School Twin Otter and University of North Dakota Cessna Citation II • Performed wind tunnel tests, CFD flow studies, and humidity chamber tests to refine sensor system design • Partnered with Mesaba Airlines for fleet evaluation in Great Lakes Region • FY 2004 Plans: • Perform flight evaluations on NOAA WP3 and NASA C-206 • Perform DO-160 testing and gain approval for Saab 340 installation • Install sensors on Mesaba aircraft and conduct fleet evaluation • Develop cockpit display

Airborne Turbulence Hazard Detection • Objective: • Develop en-route turbulence hazard prediction and warning technologies • for reducing injuries to passengers and crew • FY 2003 Accomplishments: • Completed aircraft warning experiment at CAMI • Validated Turbulence AutoPIREP algorithms on NASA B-757 • Validated radar-based turbulence hazard metric for 8 transport types • Implemented several datasets and simulation tools for turbulence technology certification process • Evaluated Lidar-based system on NASA DC-8 • FY 2004 Plans: • Complete Turbulence AutoPIREP experiment with LaRC 757 and Glenn Learjet. • Finalize certification process with FAA, implement and deliver all datasets, models, and tools.

ASAP - Advanced Satellite Aviation-weather Products • Objective: • Develop methods to use advanced satellite atmospheric-sounding and • weather-observation capabilities to improve aviation weather products • being developed by the FAA Aviation Weather Research Program - • feasible products include convection, turbulence, icing, volcanic ash, • and winds. • FY 2003 Accomplishments: • Completed cost/benefits analysis for candidate products • Collected data sets during Pacific THORPEX • Teamed with FAA Aviation Weather Research Program • FY 2004 Plans: • Collect data sets during Atlantic THORPEX and AIRS II • Perform field evaluation of ASAP In-Flight Icing Algorithms
