  2. What is ecological footprint? • It is the impact of a person or community on the environment, expressed as the amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources.

  3. What to keep in mind while calculating the Carbon footprint of a house? • How much electricity is being consumed? • How much water is being consumed? • How much waste is being produced? • What is the Carbon emission? • What is the fuel consumption?

  4. Chosen house/Residential building: • Location: Gulistan e Johar, block 12. • Area of plot: 400 sq. yds. • Floors: 2 (ground + 1) • No. of people dwelling: 7 + 8 = 14 (all adults and elderly)

  5. No. of rooms in the house: Ground floor: • 3 bedrooms. • 3 attach baths. • 1 kitchen. • 2 porch. • 1 lounge. • 1 drawing room. • 1 dining room. • First floor: • 4 bedrooms. • 3 attach baths. • 1 kitchen. • 2 balconies. • 1 lounge. • 1 dining room. • 1 laundry area.

  6. HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY IS CONSUMED? GROUND FLOOR: Space: Power: Quantity: Daily usage: Bedrooms (7) • Energy savers. 24 W 3 x 3 = 9 1.728 kWh. • Fans. 80 W 1 x 3 = 3 4.32 kWh. • AC. 1200 W 1 x 3 = 3 32.4 kWh. 9. HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY IS CONSUMED? GROUND FLOOR: Space: Power: Quantity: Daily usage: Dining: • LED spotlights. 5 W. 4 x 1 = 4 0.04 kWh. • Fan. 80 W. 1 x 1 = 1 0.16 kWh. • Iron. 1000 W. 1 x 1 = 1 3 kWh. = 3.2 kWh.

  10. HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY IS CONSUMED? FIRST FLOOR: Space: Power: Quantity: Daily usage: Bedrooms (4) • Energy savers. 24 W 3 x 4 = 122.304 kWh. • Fans. 80 W 1 x 4= 4 2.56 kWh. • AC. 1200 W 1 x 4 = 432.4 kWh. Toilets (3) • Energy savers. 24 W. 1 x 3 = 3 0.576kWh. • LED spotlights. 5 W. 1 x3 = 3 0.12 kWh. • Exhaust fans. 60 W. 1 x 3 = 3 0.36 kWh. = 38.32 kWh.

  11. HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY IS CONSUMED? FIRST FLOOR: Space: Power: Quantity: Daily usage: Kitchen. • Energy savers. 24 W 2 x 1 = 2 0.288 kWh. • Fan. 80 W. 1 x 2 = 2 0.4 kWh • Exhaust fans. 60 W. 1 x 1 = 3 0.12 kWh. • Microwave. 1200 W. 1 x 1 = 1 2.4 kWh. • Refrigerators. 180 2 x 1 = 2 8.64 kWh. = 11.848 kWh

  12. HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY IS CONSUMED? FIRST FLOOR: Space: Power: Quantity: Daily usage: Lounge: • Fans. 80 W. 2 x 1 = 2 1.28 kWh. • Energy savers. 24 W. 2 x 1 = 2 0.288 kWh. • LED spotlights. 5 W. 4 x 1 = 4 0.04 kWh. • AC. 1200 W. 1 x 1 = 1 2.4 kWh. Dining: • LED spotlights. 5 W. 4 x 1 = 4 0.04 kWh. • Fan. 80 W. 1 x 1 = 1 0.16 kWh. • Iron. 1000 W. 1 x 1 = 1 3 kWh. = 7.28 kWh

  13. HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY IS CONSUMED? FIRST FLOOR: Space: Power: Quantity: Daily usage: Balcony (2): • LED spotlights. 5 W 2 x 2 = 4 0.08 kWh. • Energy savers. 24 W. 1 x 2 = 2 0.192 kWh. Extras: • Computer. 200 W. 1 x 1 = 1 0.8 kWh. • Pump/motor. 720 W. 1 x 1 = 1 4.5 kWh. • Washing machine. 900 W. 1 x 2 = 2 5.4 kWh. = 10.972

  14. HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY IS CONSUMED? Amount of electricity by the whole building: SUMMER: DAILY USAGE: 39.504 + 11.848 + 4.416 + 3.2 + 38.32 + 11.848 + 7.28 + 10.972 = 127.388 kWh/day. 6 MONTHS USAGE (ONLY SUMMERS): 127.388 X 182 = 23, 184.616 kWh/6 months. WINTER: DAILY USAGE: 10.972 + 4.88 + 11.848 + 5.92 + 3.2 + 2.016 + 11.848 + 7.104 = 57.788 kWh/day. 6 MONTHS USAGE (ONLY WINTERS): 57.788 x 183 = 10, 575.204 kWh/6 months. AVERAGE CONSUMPTION PER YEAR : 23,184.616 + 10,575.204 = 33,759.82 kWh/year.

  15. ELECTRICITY BILL: • In summers: approximately 25,000/floor 25,000 x 2 = 50,000/-. 50,000 x 6300,000/- • In winter: approximately 10,000/floor. 10,000 x 2 = 20,000/- 20,000 x 6 = 120,000/- Bill per year: 300,000 +120,000 =420,000/-

  16. HOW CAN ELECTRICITY BE SAVED? • LED bulbs instead of energy savers can save upto 58.33 % of electricity. • Inverter refrigerators instead of normal refrigerators can save upto 50% of electricity. • Laptops instead of a computer system can save upto 80% of electricity.

  17. HOW MUCH WATER IS CONSUMED? • Approximately, 30 gallons of water is used by a person in a single day. • Consumption of people on ground floor: 30 x 7 = 210 gallons/day. • Consumption of people on first floor: 30 x 8 = 240 gallons/day. • Total consumption of water per day: 210 + 240 = 450 gallons/day. • Total consumption of water per year: 450 x 365= 164,250 gallons/year.

  18. CONSUMPTION OF FUEL: • No. of cars: 4. • No. of bikes: 3. • Average use of fuel for a car/day: approximately 400/- • Average use of fuel for a bike/day: approximately 150/- • FOR CARS: 400 x 4 = 1600 PKR /day. 1600 x 365 = 584,000 PKR/year. • FOR BIKES: 150 x 3 = 450/day. 450 x 365 = 164,250 PKR/year. TOTAL FUEL CONSUMPTION PER YEAR: 748,250 PKR/year.
