  2. HCHS 08-09 HAWK PRIDE Hazelwood Central High School will continue to build on our past successes, as well as continue to collaborate on new programs, structures and processes that will improve instruction and raise student achievement during the 2008-2009 academic school year.

  3. HCHS 08-09 HAWK PRIDE What is new at Hazelwood Central High School?

  4. HCHS 08-09 HAWK PRIDE Hazelwood Central High School will implement the following new programs and support structures for the 2008-2009 school year: • A/B Block Schedule • Academic and Mentoring Lab (AML) During the School Day (Block B6)

HCHS 08-09 HAWK PRIDE The A/B Schedule will provide the following benefits: • Decreases number of daily class changes • Allows for longer blocks of instructional time • Allows students to earn 7 credits a year • Allows for all students to receive mentoring and content-area tutoring during school day • Allows for better implementation of school-wide literacy and numeracy plans

HCHS 08-09 HAWK PRIDE • School-wide literacy plan • Learning Strategies • First Quarter • Students will incorporate effective note-taking and summarization strategies in every content area. • Students will read a minimum of 13 books this year • 8 books will be assigned through their English classes • 5 books will be assigned for outside reading in their other classes • School-wide numeracy plan • This will be phased in during second semester and will help teachers and students incorporate numeracy concepts and practices across all content areas.

HCHS 08-09 HAWK PRIDE • “Double-dipping” Freshmen in English and Math Classes Based in Academic Data to help students with a better academic transition to high school • New attendance procedures • Incidents 3 and 5 attendance interventions • AML teacher will contact parent at 3 absences • Counselor will contact parent at 5 absences • Administrator will contact parent at 8 absences • 8 unexcused absences will result in a NC status • Students will have to complete a contract for credit recovery and attend assigned make up sessions by the end of the next quarter, or within 10 days of end of school in order to recover lost credits.

  10. HCHS 08-09 HAWK PRIDE • The building site leadership team will meet on a monthly basis in order to provide for more effective communication and consistent growth as a building. This site leadership team will consist of : • All focus group leaders (2 per group) • Support administrators from each focus group (1-2 per group) • HSTW Site Coordinator • Building Principal • Parent Volunteers

HCHS 08-09 HAWK PRIDE • How can you help shape the future of • Hazelwood Central High School? • Help your child adjust to the “new” Central by helping them understand how the changes will positively impact their education at Central and beyond. • Become more involved in PTSA. • Be a member of our building and/or district HSTW committee. The building committee meets monthly. The district committee meets quarterly.

  12. HCHS 08-09 HAWK PRIDE The first district HSTW meeting will be held on Thursday, August 25th at 6:30 p.m. at the new administration building. The workshop topic will be: Smaller Learning Communities
