  1. Study of the Characteristics and Biocompatibility of Gold Nanoparticles for Cancer Treatment Presented by : Ethar Moutasim BE-2012-009 Heba Kamal BE-2012-050 Shayma Ahmed BE-2012-024 Supervised by : Feragoon Mohammed Co- supervised by : Marina Farag

  2. Content • Introduction • Problem statements • Objectives • Method • Results and discussions • Conclusion , limitations and recommendations

  3. Introduction Cancer is the up growing disease and it is a major cause of death now a days . A statistics states by GLOBOCAN 2012, estimate an increase by 19.3 million people will be diagnosed by cancer in 2025.

  4. There are many methods are using in treating cancer such as surgical, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. • But all these treatments have adverse side effects. • One of the new method of treating is using nanotechnology by nanoparticles.

  5. Nanoparticles • as the name indicates are particles in Nano size scale (10-9 m). • In treatment of cancer specially use metal nanoparticles such as gold nanoparticles due to its unique properties .

  6. Properties of Gold nanoparticles • Small size, • Biocompatibility, • High atomic number (high-Z) • The ability to bind to targeting agents, • Allow surface modification , changing size and shape

  7. Problem statements • The ways used in treating cancer are not quite targeting the tumor cells, which leads to many negative side effects. • The different methods of syntheses of GNPs such as chemical and physical method are expensive, toxic and produce uncontrolled size of gold nanoparticles.

  8. Objectives • General objective: • -To synthesize and study the characteristic and biocompatibility of gold nanoparticles. • Specific objectives: • -To synthesize gold nanoparticles with green a method. • -To study the characteristics of gold nanoparticles. • -To testing the biocompatibility (specifically the stability) of gold nanoparticles.

  9. Method , Results and discussions

  10. Method

  11. Synthesis

  12. Black seed extract preparation Cleaned ,washed and dried Black seed Socked black seed Black seed after centrifugation

  13. Formation of Gold nanoparticles Black seed extract • Gold salt solution Gum Arabic Gold nanoparticles

  14. 5ml of black seed extract

  15. Constant concentration(low concentration) different volumes 578nm 537nm 541nm 534nm

  16. Constant volume(10ml) different concentration 578nm 541nm

  17. XRD Result of GNPs The XRD shows the crystal line structure of the GNPs due to diffraction of the applied x-ray by the crystals . The reflection peaks occurs at different angles. (111) (200) (220) (311)

  18. Biocompatibility The ability of a material to perform with an appropriate host response in a specific situation. Stability is the ability of a material to maintain its physical and chemical integrity after implementation in living tissue.

  19. NaCl, BSA, Histidine and cysteine

  20. Biocompatibility Results

  21. Conclusion • The gold nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized . • The characteristics obtains that as the volume and concentration of reducing agent are changed the wave length of the absorption peak and color are changed ,The reflection peaks shows high purity of synthesized GNPs. • The gold nanoparticles are stable.

  22. Limitations • Unavailability of devices use to study characteristics. • The samples were send to Egypt twice. and there were large delay in time to obtain the results. • Lake of materials to complete the biocompatibility study • There’s no proper prepared fully sterilized lab. • Financial limitation • It is difficult to find cell line or animals have cancer to make the test on it.

  23. Recommendations • Test these nano particles on animals with cancer. • Complete the biocompatibility studies in vivo and in vitro. • apply gold nanoparticles in medical application such as photo thermal therapy.
