  10. UNITS 1 & 2 Things to do

  11. For Unit 1…… Make sure you have completed the following before moving onto Unit 2 items: • Read over the Course Syllabus thoroughly. • Read over all Announcements posted under Course Home. • Familiarize yourself with Major Course Assignments. • Read over Introduction & Key Concepts for Unit 1. • Make sure you have sent out your survey to all classmates with the 6 statements (with rating scale response) and 2 open-ended questions. • Make sure you complete ALL surveys you receive and return them promptly.

  12. For Unit 2…….. Start on the following for Unit 2 which begins tomorrow: • Read over the Introduction & Key Concepts for Unit 2. • There will be no seminar next Monday. • Make sure you have sent out your interview questions to 3 classmates to complete. Just send them out to the 3 people who follow you on the email list (in alphabetical order) so that everyone has an equal number to fill out. • Continue completing surveys and interview questions. All data collection has to be complete by the end of unit 2 as per our permission from the IRB committee. Be prompt with your responses to classmates.

  13. Planning & Creating a Timeline for Data Collection

  14. Timeline for Data Collection • Unit 1: Send out surveys by email to all your classmates. Respond to all surveys sent to you. • Unit 2: Send out interviews by email to 3 classmates that follow your name on email list. Respond to all classmates’ interviews and surveys sent to you. • Unit 3-4: Analyze and organize data for Data Analysis Paper to submit at the end of unit.

  15. Data Analysis Paper Calculating Data

  16. Data Collection for Survey Responses • You may have a computer program that you are familiar with or have access to that will keep up with the responses to your survey questions. If you do, that’s great. If not, you do have other options.

  17. Data Collection Sheet for Survey Responses (Manually) I would keep a tally sheet as the surveys came in and simply tally their answers. It’s easy to calculate percentages based on total number of participants. Let’s say I had a total of 25 people respond to my survey. I would simply divide the number of responses in each block by 25 which would give me a percentage of how many feel that way. The example below shows 8 respondents strongly agreed which is 32% with Q1 and 15 agreed which is 60% and 2 disagreed which is 8%. I can safely assume from this data that the majority of respondents agree with this question.

  18. Data Collection for Open-Ended and Interview Responses • The responses to your open-ended and interview questions will be listed exactly as you receive them such as: • Open-ended Question #1: Do you agree that many new teachers fail because they are unable to manage their classroom? Why or why not? • Respondent #1: Yes, I feel this is a big issue because it’s something you can’t learn until you are actually in the classroom. Many new teachers have not had enough real world experience on their own in a classroom to know how to handle classroom management. It is an overwhelming surprise for them. • Respondent #2: Not really. I think it is just lack of support. • Respondent #3: Yes, there is so much emphasis placed on content knowledge and getting those standards across to the students that we often forget those other skills that teachers must possess to make a classroom successful. New teachers often have to find their way with classroom management and need lots of support and guidance. With the great emphasis on the standards, we often bypass the skills we should be helping a teacher with and focus on better instruction. This causes new teachers to fail and leave the profession early.

  19. The next seminar…….. • We will go over how to analyze your data as well as the format of your Data Analysis Paper in the next seminar. Right now just focus on getting those surveys and interview questions out to your classmates and collecting the data. There will be no seminar next week. When we meet again, you will only have to analyze and put it into the format of the paper.

  20. Questions? If you do not have any further questions, you may dismiss for the evening.  Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns: TTyree@kaplan.edu
