    1. Novel mid-IR solid-state lasers for environmental and medical applications Oleg L. Antipov Leading Scientist, Head of a Research group, Ph.D. Institute of Applied Physics of Russian Academy of Science, Nizhniy Novgorod

    2. 2 Agenda / content Motivations: environmental and medical applications of mid-IR lasers Current status of the mid-IR lasers Project idea Potential Russian and EU collaborators Potential end-users Conclusion and contact information

    3. 3 Motivation: 1). mid-IR lasers (at 3-6 m) for enviromental monitoring Above 2 m one can directly reach molecular-absorption frequencies. Mid-IR tuneable laser sources are required for: Ambient air monitoring (environmental monitoring of polluting gasses); Industrial gas sensing; Chemical reaction control. Adressieren, d .h. Beobachten und auch Einwirken!Adressieren, d .h. Beobachten und auch Einwirken!

    4. 4 Motivation: 2). mid-IR lasers for gas pipeline inspection Adressieren, d .h. Beobachten und auch Einwirken!Adressieren, d .h. Beobachten und auch Einwirken!

    5. 5 Motivation: 3). mid-IR lasers for trace gas detection and medical diagnostics

    6. 6 Motivation: 4). mid-IR laser sensing for medical breath analysis and surgery

    7. 7 Current status of mid-IR lasers of around the world

    8. 8 Current status of the solid-state mid-IR lasers in the IAP RAS group

    9. 9 Project idea The created solid-state mid-IR lasers can be optimized and used for the real environmental and medical applications: 1). optimization for more compact and efficient devices; 2). creation of the laser sources at appropriate wavelength for the environmental and medical applications.

    10. 10 Description of the Project/line of research Research directions: 1). Adaptation of the laser based on the ZnGeP2-OPO pumped by the Ho:YAG laser for tunable narrow-band generation at 3-5 m. 2). Development of the PPLN:MgO-OPO pumped by the Nd:YVO4 laser for the differential-absorption gas sensing (at 3.39 m).

    11. 11 Description of the Project COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS in RUSSIA: Institute of Applied Physics of RAS and Nizhniy Novgorod State University. Potential Collaboration in EU: 1). School of Engineering and Physics of University of Dundee, Scotland, UK; 2). Nottingham University, UK; 3). University of Trondheim, Norwegian.

    12. 12 Description of the Project Potential end-users of the mid-IR solid-state laser sources: Industrial companies; Gas-distributed companies in Europe and Russia; Medical clinics. Universities.
