  2. DoxologyPraise God, from whom all blessings flow;Praise Him, all creatures here below;Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.—Amen.

  3. Memory VersePhil 2:5, “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus.”

  4. John 15:16Predestined to Glorify God!

  5. Jesus is the one who has placed them in the Vine as branches, in order to produce Divine Good.

  6. Contrary to the common practice of disciples picking a teacher, Jesus chose them, John 15:19, to produce lasting fruit (Divine Good Production).

  7. He chose them for a mission, providing equal privilege and equal opportunity inside their Royal Priesthood: the Father would answer their requests. John 14:13-14; 15:7; 16:23-24, 26

  8. Jesus is emphatically saying the disciples did not choose Him, and by extension that applies to all believers too.

  9. Jesus is emphatically saying, I chose you!

  10. EKLEGOMAI – Aorist, Middle, Indicative. “To choose, select or elect.”

  11. ALLA - “but, rather, yet or on the contrary.”EKLEGOMAI - Aorist, Middle, Indicative. Jesus Christ selected His disciples just as God has elected or chosen you.

  12. This same verb and tense are used for the choice of the disciples by Christ in John 6:70; John 13:18; John 15:19. See also Mat 4:18-22 and Mark 2:14.

  13. Jesus recognized His own responsibility in the choice of His disciples after a night of prayer, according to Luke 6:13.

  14. KAI - Coordinating Conjunction “and”, ties together what we just noted; “selection”, with what follows; “appointment.”

  15. TITHEMI - Aorist, Active, Indicative, “to put, place, lay, set, appoint, assign, destine, etc.”, just as a king selects his officers who will carry out his purposes.

  16. John 15:16a, “You all yourselves did not choose Me, on the contrary I Myself have chosen you all and appointed you all…”

  17. Principles:

  18. 1. It was customary among the Jews for every person to choose his own teacher, but Christ reversed this order. His disciples were hand-picked to become the foundation of His Church.

  19. 2. John’s Gospel emphasizes that Jesus, not the disciples, had done the choosing, John 15:16,19; cf. 13:18.

  20. 3. Jesus’ selection was theologically significant, not only for the Gospel accounts but for the later Church as well, Luke 6:13; John 6:70; cf. Acts 1:2.

  21. 4. The importance of this order of selection is that His choice is entirely free. It did not rise from any character, motive or condition in them.
