  2. Origins of swimming • Swimming dates back to the stone age. • Swimming is referenced in famous books like the Odysseyand Beowulf • It is a essential survival skill. • It was part of the first Olympics in 1896.

  3. Fun Facts • The breaststroke is the oldest swim style. • The titanic was the first ship to have a swimming pool. • You weigh less in a swimming pool. • Swimming reduces stress. • You’ll swim faster with shorter hair. • Egyptians had symbols for swimming.

  4. Basic rules of swimming • Must have experience swimming. • Swim when there is a lifeguard on duty. • Do not swim alone • Don’t swim during thunderstorms. • Don’t dive head first. • Don’t swim under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drugs

  5. Before you swim • Don’t eat before you swim because you could get a muscle cramp. • Make sure you stretch before you swim. • Make sure you take a shower and use soap. • Know your surroundings and pay attention.

  12. Backstroke • This is also called the back crawl. • This style is swum on your back. • The only style that starts off in the water. • Swimmers can breath easily during this swim style.

  13. Freestyle • Also called the front crawl. • The fastest stoke in swimming • Used in relay races and medley races.

  14. Breastroke Just one more lap! • This is the slowest of all the swim styles. • Swimmers eyes are above the water. • Used in lifesaving situations. • Requires endurance and leg strength.

  15. Butterfly Dolphin kick Strong Shoulders • This is the hardest swimming style to learn. • A dolphin kick and very strong shoulders are required for this swim style. • Requires years of practice.

  16. Olympic swimming pool • Much bigger than a regular pool. • It has 10 lanes which are 50 meters long • It has diving blocks. • These are the pools that professionals swim in.

  17. Individual medley • The race is swum by one person. • The swimmer swims the backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and freestyle. • The swimmer swims the same distance for each swim style. • The fastest swimmers wins the race.

  18. Medley race • This is swum with a team of four. • Each person on the team swims one swim style. • Swim styles cannot be repeated. • All swimmers swim the same distance. • It’s a team event and the fastest time wins. Go Team
