  1. Tzvetan Todorov Vladimir Propp Rolande Bathes Narrative Theories

  2. Outline on theories. Theories regarding narrative structures have been around for a long time. They are an important focus when deconstructing a narrative and the purpose it serves for the audience. In order to therefore create your own narrative you should be aware of the three different narrative theories and what they mean. The three theories from three different theorists: Tzvetan Todorov, Vladimir Propp and Rolande Bathes.

  3. Tzvetan Todorov Tzvetan Todorov says there are 5 stages to a narrative: Equilibrium: A disruption of this equilibrium with an event. A realisation that this disruption has occurred. An attempt to fix what has gone wrong. A restoration of equilibrium/ a new equilibrium. His theory is most often applied in advertising as well as both non-fiction and fiction texts.

  4. Vladimir Propp Vladimir Propp published his theory in 1928 after an analysis into the structure of narratives. Through his analysis he identified that such stories seemed to be about the same basic problems and the same basic character types. Although some texts apply exactly to the character types he noted there were 8 types of characters. Hero (on a quest). Villain. Donor (helps the hero). The princess and her father (gives the task to the hero). The dispatcher (starts the hero on his quest). The false hero (temps him away from his quest). The helper (helps the hero).

  5. Rolande Bathes Rolande bathes was concerned with the negotiated meaning which is held between the producers of the media. He suggests that audiences gather new meanings from a text based upon their previous experiences. There are 2 fundamental codes of Barthes negotiated meaning theory these are: Action code – when we see an action in a text and we anticipate what consequences will follow. Enigma code – media producers use a hook or an element of mystery in the plot to raise questions for the audience, which we feel, must be resolved.

  6. Vladimir Propp Theory Applied. A good example to apply Vladmir Propp’s theory to is the Marvel Comic, Games and Film that is Batman. His theory is applied to this well as through out the series of films, games and comics there has always been the character structure that Propp talks about. These are: Hero - Batman. Villain – Joker, Two-Face, Penguin, Riddler. Donor – Alfred. The princess and her father – James Gordon. The dispatcher - James Gordon. The false hero – Cat women. The helper - Robin.
