  3. Make a List of how we manage nature: • Conservation areas • Zoos and wildlife parks • Control animal population with hunting • Kill pests with chemicals (pesticides) • Kill weeds with herbicides • Where, when and what we can build (environmental impact assessments)

  4. Tragedy of the Commons! • A "commons" is any resource used as though it belongs to all. In other words, when anyone can use a shared resource simply because one wants or needs to use it, then one is using a commons. • For example, all land is part of our commons because it is a component of our life support and social systems.

  5. A commons is destroyed by uncontrolled use- it is not important if it was destroyed on purpose or by accident • An example can be when we use land any way we want.

  6. Ecological Footprints !!! • All our activities have environmental effects that can be understood in terms of land area required to support us, our footprint. • When the footprints of the total population of the world exceeds the land available, the population is not sustainable!

  7. So, can we have a sustainable future? need to think about population control technology our footprints wealth the “commons”

  8. Sustainable Future • Paradigm: a way of looking at the world that is shared by most of the people in the community. • They change as people’s knowledge, technologies, discoveries change.
