  2. Father’s Day • On Mother’s Day • Sweet thoughts, kind words • Sermon blesses mothers • On Father’s Day • Strong, “shame on you” • Sermon clubs them over the head • “Pater” = Greek word for “father” • Today – 5 P’s important to being a father

  3. 1 – Prayer • Kids need to know that you: • Honor God in your life • Show gratitude – meal time • Pray about important matters • Live like a Christian • 1 Corinthians 4:12 - And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure;

  4. 1 – Prayer • 1 Corinthians 4:15 - For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. • Children need and look for spiritual leadership from their father

  5. 2 – Patience • Challenge and urge your kids to do their best • But don’t demand perfection • You aren’t. Why demand it of them? • Proverbs 19:11 - The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, And his glory is to overlook a transgression. • Our reaction can do more damage than the infraction.

  6. 3 – Play • Kids must learn social skills • They learn through play • Sharing toys • Play by the rules • Lose / Win with honor • Can’t change rules as you go • Take them fishing, hunting, kick a ball, swing, slide, play catch

  7. 4 – Praise • There is power in acceptance - tell them they did good • Ephesians 6:4 - And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. • Be more positive than negative • Like a bank account – deposit more than you withdraw

  8. 5 – Purpose • Husbands cannot abdicate leadership • There are many demands on our time • Work, social, personal, church • Recreation, home, marriage • Ecclesiastes 3:1 – To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:

  9. Legacies are Forever • Stuff doesn’t matter – kids do • Stuff can get lost, broken, replaced • A spiritual legacy will last past your lifetime • Honor your father for his leadership, sacrifice, dedication, and provision for the family.

  10. Conclusion • We should honor our fathers for all that they have done, provided • We should honor them for their example of spiritual leadership • We should follow them as they follow Christ • 1 Corinthians 11:1 - Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
