  2. Welcome! • Welcome to the Gibbons GALACTIC Center! • Home of our elementary gifted program. • I am the new Coordinator of Gifted Education Ms. Melanie Bloom

  3. What does GALACTIC stand for? A) Go Ahead Love and Care for Teachers in Class B) Gifted Alternative Learning ACTivities Involving Children C) Grammar and Language Arts Can Transform in Class D) Great and Loving Amazing Classroom Teachers in Class

  4. Hazelwood Gifted • We are very fortunate in Hazelwood because our Board of Education has consistently supported gifted education. • It’s important that we communicate with the Board consistently to let them know concerns and pride that we have in GALACTIC (and SAIL at the middle school).

Goals of Galactic Galactic Goal: • Educate your child in a “different” way • Advanced Vocabulary • Accelerated Pace • Rigor • Real-Life Student responsibilities to attain goals: • Individual Effort is Necessary • Responsible for Learning • High expectations for working hard and for positive behaviors

Goals of Galactic • Sometimes when students face new and challenging obstacles they may state that “it’s no fun” or that they are “bored”, but in reality it may be the first time that your student has ever experienced a challenge of this nature. • It is our goal to ensure that we are challenging your student in new ways and providing new experiences to help him/her learn and be successful. • We strive to foster a Growth Mindset.   8. GALACTIC Staff • We have a superstar team of educators here at GALACTIC. Right now, they are working with your students and our 2nd graders, but I’m sure you’ll get to know many of them over the course of this semester.

How We Evaluate? • 4 Point Scale • 4-extending • 3-achieving • 2-developing • 1-emerging • Expectations • Critical Thinking • Creative Thinking • Self-Management • Collaboration • Communications (Oral/Written) • Content • Does not correlate to letter grades • Goal is a 3 at the end of the semester • Mid-semester should expect mostly 2’s

  11. PBIS/Recognition • Earn tags for excellence in an assessed area

Sign-ups/Class Information • Sign-ups occur on the first day of class (important to be here). • You can visit the course offerings online to see what is available this semester. https://www.hazelwoodschools.org/domain/1429 • Students are likely to get a few of their top choices. • Students should plan to have a few back-up choices. • Procedure of selecting classes is kind of like a draft pick.

Discipline/Uniforms/Nurse • Discipline: • Handled like every other Hazelwood School • When action is required=email or phone call home • Code of Conduct • Uniforms (If required by home school): • Uniforms are NOT required for grades 2-5 • 1st graders only attend ½ day. If uniform required then he/she must wear to GALACTIC • Follow dress code • Nurse: • Medication Required? • Nurse-Chris Carlson

Absences To be successful, you have to be here… • If your child is ill, please call us at 314-953-4954 • 3 Unexcused Absences Allowed, but it will be hard to keep up since we meet only 1x per week • A letter will be sent home after 2 unexcused absences • If your child is thinking about not returning, please give us a call we would love to address his/her concerns

  16. Lunch • Cost: • Full Lunch: $2.20 • Milk/Juice: $.45 • Hazelwood students use ONE lunch account • Private & Home-Schooled students will be created an account. • Recess Provided

  17. Arrival • 9:00 AM • Bus Riders • GALACTIC bus from home school • Dropped off in bus lane • Car Riders • Dropped off in bus lane • Late Arrivals • After 9:15-drop off at front of building and check in

Dismissal • For dismissal, every group of students is escorted to their designated location. • Please remember that the bus routes in the PM are long and to allow for extra time for your student to return home. • All students riding the bus home from GALACTIC will be delivered to the bus stop nearest their home address between 4-5 PM (first few weeks – may be even later). • Also, I ask that the cars NOT enter the bus lanes. • If you have any questions about transportation or how your student is returning home, please ask Ms. Payne in the office.

  28. New 1st Graders • Get on GALACTIC bus at homeschool • Stay at GALACTIC from 9:00-12:00 • 2 Classes Per Semester • Snack/recess midway through morning—send with child • Lunch at homeschool • 1st Graders automatically become day long 2nd graders

  29. New 2nd Graders • Full Day • Lunch and Recess Here • Same lunch account/number as home school • Class Choices • Go over ahead of time to be prepared for sign-ups • Change at Semester • 4 classes in one day • Transportation home-LONG bus rides
