Carbohydrates There are two types of carbohydrates in foods: simple and complex. • Simple carbohydrates: Are small sugars, almost like starch, and are two sugars bonded together. • Complex carbohydrates: Complex carbohydrates are chains of three or more single, & more healthy. • Carbohydrates are also very high in calories and should be 60% of your daily calorie intake. • Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy • Bread, cereal,& rice are examples of Carbohydrates.

  3. FAT • One source of energy and important in relation to fat soluble vitamins. • You should have around 13% of fat a day. • Fat is needed for absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. • Fat is also very bad for you if you have too much

  4. Water • 43% of water-related deaths are due to diarrhea. • 3.575 million people die each year from water-related disease. • 75% of the human brain is water and 75% of a living tree is water. • Approximately 75% of your muscle is made of water. • Water helps transport nutrients in the body • Helps get rid of wastes

  5. Protein • Protein makes up your body's structure • Proteins are made up of amino acids • Protein digestion releases nitrogen waste • Inadequate protein intake damages your body • Your body uses protein to build, & repair almost all tissue in your body.

  6. Fiber • Two types of dietary fiber: soluble and insoluble. • Insoluble fiber is not soluble in water. • Soluble fiber is soluble in water, and include pectin, gum, and mucilage. • Soluble fiber decreases blood cholesterol levels. • Also reduces the risk of heart disease.

  7. Vitamins • Vitamins are organic compounds required by an organism for healthy survival. • Your body needs Vitamins to work properly, so you grow and develop just like you should. • Vitamin D in milk helps your bones. • Vitamin A in carrots helps you see at night. • Vitamin C in oranges helps your body heal if you get a cut. • Vitamin B in leafy green vegetables help your body make protein and energy. • There are two types of vitamins: fat soluble and water soluble.

  8. Minerals • There are 16 different minerals. • Minerals support body cells and structures. • Also work to regulate many body processes. • Certain Minerals are absorbed better than the other Minerals. • “Meat” type foods tend to be better absorbed than vegetables and fruit.
