  6. Internships create a clear nexus between higher education providers and the museum sector, and act as a crucial integrative force, reflecting and reinforcing the frequent movement of museum professionals into academia and vice versa. • The Interface: Not Two, But Three Partners • Host Institution or collecting agency • Higher Education institutions • Student

  7. Educational designing with flexibility, constructivism and reflection in mind • Flexibility to accommodate regional, national or international placements • Constructive alignment across all educational elements ie outcomes, activities and assessment ( Biggs 1999) • Guidelines for workplace supervisors to educational issues related to informal learning and professional competence (Chivers & Cheetham 2005) • Attention to ongoing three-way communication and reflection (ie between intern, workplace supervisor, and university internship co-ordinator) • Structured, guided reflective practice (Moon1999)

  8. Learning Paradigms • Little research into learning processes occurring in internships • Natural cross-over from formal learning of higher education to the experiential learning (Boud 1993) and informal learning (Falk & Dierking 2000) • Reflective practices

  9. Bula Bula Arts Centre Ramingining

  10. Excerpt from student November 8, 2010 • Visual anthropologist student (with archeology background) • I used to hate that people would come and talk to me … but now I feel it is the greatest thing in all the world … the people in the NT are really interesting, everyone has a great story, and even if it isn’t a great story, it’s a story about them after all, and it makes you step outside your little box and see the world from someone else’s point of view.

  11. New Tools • Remodeled wiki tool for reflective journal – a constant point of contact. Try to keep all communication on one platform • moving from Wiki to Dialogue in 2011 • Use Forum if numbers continue increase • Voice podcaster • Other technologies that museums are using – authentic tasks – Twitter
