  4. Elements of Art • The sevenelements of art are the building blocks of art. You can not make visual art without them! • Line- How does the artist use lines in this artwork? Are the lines angular (pointy) or curvilinear (rounded)? Thick or thin? Long or short? Broken or continuous? • Shape- What shapes do you see? How are shapes used in the artwork? • Color- What colors or color schemes are used and how do the colors work together to give the artwork a particular feeling or mood? • Texture- How does the surface feel? Does the art look rough, smooth, prickly, etc.? • Value- How is dark and light used in this artwork? • Space- How is distance shown in this artwork? • Form- Is the artwork flat or three dimensional?

  9. How does each artist use value (dark and light)? Which direction is the light coming from in each painting? What is a silhouette? Which painting has the most contrast(most dramatic) of dark and light?

  10. Visual Movement How do your eyes travel through the paintings? Horizontally?Vertically? Diagonally? In a swirling motion? Horizontal means side to side. Vertical means up and down. Diagonal means slanted.

  11. Balance Which painting has more of a symmetrical balance, or the same on both sides? Which painting has more of an asymmetrical balance, or different elements on each side?

  12. Using fractions, estimate the amount of space in each painting that is filled with spirals. Explain how you get your answer. • Using fractions, estimate the amount of black paint used in each painting. Explain how you got your answer.
