  2. How does the United States expand its influences? • How do you think Rome expanded their territory?

  3. Rome Conquers Italy • Legions: Roman soldiers organized into large military unites • Romans controlled Italian Peninsula • Defeated the Etruscans in the North and the Greek city-states in the South.

  4. What happens to the people who are now conquered? • Why was Rome so lenient?

  5. Empire Emerges • Empire – A civilization or country that takes over another civilization or country without extending the same rights to the conquered people.

  6. Punic Wars • War between Rome and Carthage broke out for control of the Mediterranean. • After 3 separate wars, Rome finally laid siege to Carthage, burned the city, and sold 50,000 people into slavery • Gave Rome Dominance over the Mediterranean

  7. The Republic Collapses • Rome’s increasing wealth and expanding territory gave way to many problems • What could those problems be?

  8. Problems: • Gap between the rich and the poor • Enslaved population • Civil War • Breakdown of the military

  9. Julius Caesar • Military leader who wanted to become Consul of Rome • Joined forces with Crassus, a wealthy Roman • Joined forces with Pompey, a powerful general • Dominated Rome as a Triumvirate • Why would some politicians want the support of the military?

  10. Julius Caesar • Served 1 year • Captured Gaul (France) • Popular with troops and people • Senate became scared of his power and ambition and demanded he return home and disband his army

  11. Caesar defied the senate and destroyed anyone who was in his way • Appointed dictator for life

  12. Reforms • Granted Roman citizenship to more in provinces • Expanded Senate • Created jobs for average people (public building projects, etc.) • Fabulous festivals

  13. Out of fear of his growing power and influence powerful members of the senate assassinated Caesar on March 15, 44BC
