The Roman Republic • Before Rome was Rome • Etruscans Ruled northern Italy from the plains of Eturia. 900B.C -500 B.C • Alphabet from Greek but little has been translated. • Etruscan art suggests a culture of wealthy overlords, aristocratic priests, and slaves: oppressed Etruscan lower classes and other Italian people: eventually overthrown by oppressed Etruscan lower classes and other Italian people. • Latins were among the people enslaved and their center city was Rome in the central plain of Latium.

  3. The Roman Republic • Early Rome and the Roman Republic • With all due respect to the story of Romulus and Remus, Rome was founded when Latin villages on the Seven Hills of Rome joined together as one community. • Etruscans took control around 620 B.C. -Built brick buildings and tiled roads to Rome - Drained marshlands and planned city streets

  4. The Toman Republic • Early Rome and the Roman Republic • In 509 B.C wealthy Roman landowners overthrew the Etruscan king and vowed never again to be ruled by a monarch. • What happened next to Rome? 2. A Republic is a form of government in which voters elect officials to run the state. - Only adult male citizens were entitled to vote and take part in government. - Three important group so citizens helped govern the republic: Senate, magistrates, and popular assemblies.

  5. The Roman Republic • Senate • Most influential and powerful of the three governing bodies - Controlled public funds and decided foreign policy - In times of emergency (wars), the senators could propose a citizen be named dictator.

  6. The Roman Republic • Magistrates included consuls, praetors, and censors. • Two individuals were elected to one-year terms to serve as consuls chief executives. - Consul ran the government, commanded the army, and could appoint dictators. • Each consul could veto or refuse to approve the acts of other consuls - This division of power was the principle of checks and balances.

  7. The Roman Republic • Magistrates • Romans elected praetors to help the consuls. - During war praetors commanded armies. -During peace they oversaw the Roman legal system . • Censors registered citizens according to their wealth. - Appointed candidates to the Senate - Oversaw the moral conduct of all citizens.

  8. The Roman Republic • The Conflict of the Orders • Romans were divided into two classes of people: patricians and plebians. • Patricians- were powerful landowners who controlled the government. Inherited their powers. • Plebeians-who made up most of the population, were mainly farmers and workers. - For years plebeians had few rights, could vote but barred from office.

  9. The Roman Republic • The Republic Grows - The years of the Roman Republic were not a time of peace. -More than 200 years of war. • Role of Roman army - Every adult male citizen who owned land was required by law to serve. - Army generals who enforce discipline. - Every major unit was a legion, consisting of 4,500 to 6,000 citizens called legionnaires.
