CBA – the positives? • Summative assessment without human marking • Formative feedback without human intervention • Enables automatic monitoring of progress • Objective (more accurate than teachers?) • Shareable • Large numbers generate statistics that enable module improvement. • Always available instant feedback!! • Piggy back on Open Source materials)

CBA - the negatives • Easiest to construct at low levels of Bloom’s taxonomy (knowledge, understanding, application, analysis synthesis and evaluation) • Front end cost (exacerbated by complexity and targeted feedback) • Fraud • Validity (real and perceived) • Interoperability (QTI standard not implemented)

Task Explore www.open.ac.uk\openmarkexamples Choose an appropriate LO for your module, split into pairs and write either • An example of MCQ with the feedback that you would offer if the student got it wrong, or • An example of a Drag and Drop Question with the feedback that you would offer if the student got it wrong. Feedback one questions from each module team.
