Brief History of APHEO • 1991 – Inaugural meeting • 1992 – Terms of reference, first executive elected • 1993 – First APHEO workshop • 1994 – First constitution, official name and mission • 1995 – Became affiliate of alPHa, OCCHA • 1997 – Website launched, logo created, Membership expanded to include affiliates • 1999 – Core Indicators binder produced • 2000 – First strategic planning session • 2001 – APHEOLIST listserve started • 2002 – Joined OPHA, Core Indicators website launched • 2003 – New URL and website, Health Canada contracts, SARS, 100+ members • 2004 – Second strategic planning completed • 2006 – Core Competency contract • 2007 – Epidata Project, Epi Core Competencies done

  4. 2000 Strategic PlanningSix Strategic Issues Identified 1-2 Year Time Frame • Defining the scope and value of epidemiology in Public Health • Demonstrating, promoting and marketing the scope of epidemiology and how APHEO supports this • Using technology to increase communication between members • Building project specific partnerships • Getting Program Planning and Evaluation General Standard on the table and influencing it • Resolving the member/affiliate status issue

  5. 2003/2004 Strategic PlanningComponents • Planning session on Oct 15, 2003 in Kingston for half-day at APHEO conference – 25 members attended • Strategic Planning Meeting Feb 5&6 2004 at Courtyard Mariott Hotel in Toronto – 11 members attended, in tandem with OPHA Core Competencies meeting • Both sessions facilitated by Judith Mackenzie, used workbooks, produced 2 reports

  6. October 2003 Session Accomplishments 4 Year Time Frame • Themes from 2000 strategic planning were reviewed and updated in terms of progress • Vision statement drafted • Environmental scan completed • Goal statements drafted • 21 potential action steps drafted from brainstorming session

  8. APHEO’s Mission • To advance and promote the discipline and professional practice of epidemiology in Ontario public health units

  9. Problem: Not clearly documented, Is this the final version? APHEO’s Vision • By the Year 2007, APHEO will be a valued and recognized leader in public health. This will be accomplished by: • Promoting the science and practice of epidemiology to strengthen the public health system, • Providing support and professional development opportunities for its members and, • Acting as a key resource for the advancement of public health.

APHEO’s Values Statement • As a professional organization APHEO: • Is committed to work to improve the health of the population, • Believes that epidemiologists are integral to public health core functions, • Is committed to advancing the science and evidence-based practice of public health epidemiology, • Is committed to a supportive and participatory network of people with an interest in epidemiology and, • Is committed to high standards for the practice of epidemiology.
