  1. 22.3 Resources and Land Use

  2. People all agree that natural resources are important • The question is how to best use them

  3. Resources of the U.S. • America has been known for a long time as a land of plenty • Farmland • Rich alluvial soil (silt) has made the land very fertile in the Midwest and the South • California as well as Oregon and Wash. State have rich valleys • Until the 1900s the farms were run by familues • Now many of the farms are run by large corporations - agribusinesses

  4. Resources of the U.S. • Water • Vital to life, farming, transportation and industry • In modern times it has also become an important source of energy • Hydroelectricity is generated by numerous dams across the US including the Grand Coulee Dam More electricity generated than any other dam in the US • Forests • Our forests are less than they used to be • Still an important natural resource • Lumber • Pulp for paper • Wood for furniture

  5. Resources of the U.S. • Energy and Mineral Resources • The US produces and consumes more fossil fuels than any other country • We do import most of our oil • We also produce a lot – mostly in Alaska • Natural gas is also found in the US - used as fuel • Coal is very important for fuel, and in making steel • The mining industry is still strong in the US • Although it employs less than 1% of our work force the mineral are valuable in other industries

  6. Resources of Canada • The original settlers in Canada were trappers, lumber jacks and fishermen • Today less than 5% of Canadians make their living in these industries • Farmland • Less than 10% of Canada is suitable for farming • The land out west (prairies) is good for wheat & cattle • The St Lawrence Lowlands produce milk, fruit and vegies • Water • The Mackenzie and St. Lawrence rivers are valuable for transportation (especially before railroads) • 9% of the world’s fresh water is in Canada

  7. Resources of Canada • Mineral and energy resources • The Canadian Shield is rich in mineral • Oil and natural gas deposits are found in the prairie provinces • Canada uses its rivers to produce hydroelectricity • What is a potential negative side effect to hydroelectricity? • Forests • Nearly ½ of Canada is covered in forests • Leading producer and exporter of timber • British Columbia (west coast) is the largest timber producing region in Canada
