Sure Start Bramley • 125 respondents: 124 female, 1 male • 20% aged 16-25; 61% aged 26-35; 14% aged 36-45 • 69% with partner; 22% with no-one else;10% adult relatives or other adults • Two-thirds had either 1 or 2 children • 121 described selves as white UK Participants • 39 (31%) part-time job; 53 looking after home / children Partners • 82 out of 90 partners in full-time job or self-employed • 1 partner looking after home / children Nationwide Children's Research Centre University of Huddersfield

Mothers with special / additional needs children • 13 participants (out of 125): all female; all white UK • 7 with partner; 4 with no-one else; 2 with adult relatives • 4 experienced pnd; 2 not sure; 6 said no • satisfaction levels with general SSB services mainly high or very high • 10 had contact with SS worker in last twelve months • 11 had access to good quality play / learning opportunities • 8 read to child every day; 3 weekly; 1 less often • 9 smoked, 4 did not smoke; 3 gave up during pregnancy (6 did not) Nationwide Children's Research Centre University of Huddersfield

Domestic Violence: SSB Women’s Group  Domestic violence reason for referral in 59/206 (29%) referrals to Outreach Team  Women’s Group (up to 8 women) ran from Jan 2001  Took referrals from wider area including women with children over 4  Twelve week programme, but attendance not time limited  Sessions could be harrowing; many participants had been sexually abused Recommendations • more focus on support for children • tackle issues of stigma attaching to domestic violence • stricter time limits and referral criteria; for Women’s Group • rotate staff for women’s groups to enhance ownership of group Nationwide Children's Research Centre University of Huddersfield
