  1. Klinefelter Syndrome What do you know about it?

  2. Did you know… ..that this particular birth defect is defined by the presence of an extra X chromosome in a male, and that it has been found to have up to 3 extra in some cases? ….Klinefelter Syndrome results from an error during the division of the sex chromosomes in either the egg or the sperm for no apparent reason, and it is highly unlikely to affect further children? …that unlike other genetic syndromes, the cause is not related to either the age of the mother or the father at the time of conception? 3. Did you know… … males with this syndrome are usually infertile and have abnormal body proportions? … the hardest aspects for a male with Klinefelter’s to deal with are enlarged breasts, less hair growth throughout the body, smaller sexual organs, and sexual problems? … it can be diagnosed at birth through prenatal screening and tests, but there is no cure or way to correct the genetic code? (A blood sample which will provide a “karyotype” or photographic illustration of the chromosomes in a single cell.) Klinefelter Syndrome

  4. Did you know… … Klinefelter’s is the most common chromosomal disorder? … it isn’t that obvious a disorder that some males are not diagnosed until development delays are noticed? … low intellectual levels seem to occur in only 20% of males with this syndrome so it isn’t considered a guaranteed symptom? … that like many syndromes, each individual can be affected differently, some may experience depression, dental problems, or ADHD, while others are not? Klinefelter Syndrome Factoid:Some XXY males can also benefit from fertility treatment to help them father children. http://www.nature.com/ncpuro/journal/v4/n4/images/ncpuro0775-f1.jpg

  5. Did you know… … it affects 1 out of every 500-1000 male newborns? … does not seem to be prevalent in one race over another? Klinefelter Syndrome Need Support or More Information? www.aaksis.org http://www.nichd.nih.gov/publications/pubs/klinefelter.htm http://www.genetic.org/knowledge/support/action/199/ Factoid: XXY males with enlarged breasts have the same risk of breast cancer as do women - roughly 50 times the risk XY males have. For this reason, XXY adolescents and men need to practice regular breast self examination.
