  2. Why Present Research? • Pave the way for more research • Increase self-confidence • Improve public speaking skills • Build your resume for jobs

  3. Why Present Research? • Create new knowledge • Communicate your results to the world • Clarify your thinking • Encourage other undergraduates

  4. Ways Research is Presented • Papers – written report of research (purpose, methods, results, conclusion, next steps) • Presentations – oral discussion of research • To your research group • To your program participants (e.g. summer research program) • To conference attendees • Posters – visual aid that provides a concise summary of research • Provides research explanation with or without you • Web Sites

Opportunities for Presenting Research • Conferences/Competitions • Many professional technical societies host student conferences and competitions • IEEE, ACM, SWE, NSBE, etc. • Provide a supportive environment to present your research findings • Allow you to earn funds toward your education • Publications • Your web site (example: Anna Liao’s site: http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~miriya/project.html) • ERL Technical Memos - informal way to document research findings • Journals - You can submit papers to undergraduate scientific journals (e.g. Berkeley Scientific, Synergy)

Next Steps: • Discuss the idea of presenting research with your current research advisor(s) • Define project to allow for research to be documented and presented • Obtain guidance for the development of technical paper or presentation materials • Search for possible venues to present your research • Stop by the Center for Undergraduate Matters in 246 Cory Hall
