  4. The Introduction of Gateway Arch The Gateway Arch in Saint Louis, Missouri is the tallest freestanding monument in the nation. The shiny, steel curve rises to almost two hundred meters. Below, the arch is exactly as wide as it is tall. The famous Finnish American building designer, Eero Saarinen, designed the Gateway Arch during a national competition in the late nineteen forties. However, the building did not begin until February, nineteen sixty-three. It was completed in October, nineteen sixty-five. Later a transport system was added to permit people to visit an observation area inside the top of the arch. The Gateway Arch rises above the Mississippi River. It was named in honor of Saint Louis, which was historically called "The Gateway to the West."

  17. Text Visiting the Gateway Arch How Does it Compare (para. 1) The Gateway Arch is the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere. At 630 feet, the Arch is 75 feet taller than the Washington Monument and over twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty! The 60-foot heads carved on the face of Mount Rushmore are designed to the scale of men who would stand 465 feet tall, a height that would easily allow such giants to walk through the legs of the Arch! The Arch surpasses Egypt’sGreat Pyramid (450ft) in height, but is smaller than the Eiffel Tower (984ft). While The Gateway Arch is America’stallest monument, several buildings, such as New York’sEmpire State Building (1250ft) and Chicago’sSears Tower (1454ft) would loom over the Arch. (Para. 1)The 60-foot heads carved on the face of Mount Rushmore are designed to the scale of men who would stand 465 feet tall, a height that would easily allow such giants to walk through the legs of the Arch! Analysis: This is a very complicated sentence. In the first part, carved on the face of Mount Rushmore is a past participle phrase modifying heads; who introduces a relative clause modifying men; and that introduces another relative clause modifying height, which in turn is in apposition to 465 feet tall. The subjunctive mood would allow is used to indicate that this is merely a comparison that can’tactually happen in reality.

Example: While I understand what you say, I can’tagree with you. 1 2

  19. Ride to the Top of the Arch (para. 2) Your trip to the top of The Gateway Arch begins when you purchase a ticket at the TRAMTICKET WINDOW, located along the east wall of the Arch lobby area. During peak seasons, a trip to the top leaves every five minutes, while off-season trams operate every ten to twenty minutes. A ramp and steps lead to the loading area, where you board one of the two unique capsule-transporter systems (trams). The north and south tram each consists of eight barrel-shaped capsules joined together to form a train-like vehicle that runs on tracks inside the legs of the Arch. Each capsule holds five passengers and isequipped with a leveling device to keep you in an upright position on the four-minute ride to the top. On a clear day, a thirty-minutes panoramic view from 630 feet in the air awaits you! Because the tram system was installed before modern access standards, the observation deck at the top of the Arch is not wheel-chair accessible. A total of 214 steps need to be negotiated in getting to the top and back down. Video kiosks in the Arch visitor center provide an alternative tram experience. 3 (Para. 2) Your trip to the top of The Gateway Arch begins when you purchase a ticket at the TRAM TICKET WINDOW, located along the east wall of the Arch Lobby area. Translation: 你只需在拱门休息区东墙边的升降车售票处买张票便可以开始你的登顶之旅。 4 5
