  4. Admission (Minimum) Requirements

  5. Plan of Study for a Masters Student

  6. Plan of Study for a PhD Student

  7. Funding Funding is available on a competitive basis for M.S. thesis and PhD. on–campus students.  Students should contact faculty in their area of interest to see if those faculty have research projects to work on with them and funds available for research assistantships.  If a faculty member decides to fund a student, they will notify the department. Faculty Directory: http://mae.mst.edu/facultyandstaff/directoryfaculty.html • 80% of research–oriented students are funded

  8. GRA vs. GTA Most MS (thesis) or PhD students supported as Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) or as Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA). Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) • Work with a professor on an externally funded research project. • Research done as a GRA used to write thesis/dissertation. • Contact faculty member (in area of interest) to find out if he/she has a funded project and need a GRA Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) • Will be required to assist in teaching a Lab/class. • Contact Grad Secretary (Ms. Kathy Wagner) • International students cannot be a GTA during their first semester in the US

  9. GRA vs. GTA • Both GRA/GTA positions are competitive. • Appointment is based on the Department’s need (teaching and research) and available funding. • Department has no need for GTAs in the summer • GRA support during the summer if your advisor has funding. • All GRA/GTA are eligible for in-state (MO) tuition rate. • As a GTA/GRA, you only pay for the first 6 hours/semester. • To be on a GTA/GRA, you must pursue a thesis option. There are no deadlines. Faculty members make GRA offers as and when they find a qualified applicant. Sooner you contact a faculty member better your chances are of getting an offer.

  10. Research Proposals Awarded • A total of 44 proposals have been awarded in the financial year 2010 totaling $5,098,579.
