  1. Medium Range Public Transportation Jonathan Chiew AA253 – Spring 2009

  2. Concept • Develop a top-level public transportation system capable of moving 1.5 million passengers per year between two cities 500nm miles apart • Infrastructure will built from ground up • Numbers reflect conditions similar to Atlanta-Chicago route

  3. Objectives • Develop system with trip lengths comparable to or shorter than current day systems • Design for passenger throughput increases through future system expansions – current systems are bottlenecked • Maintain passenger comfort levels and attempt to reduce overall cost

  4. QFD – Stakeholders & Values • Cost, reliability, safety, ROI, and performance are key values

  5. QFD – Values & Requirements • Reliability, cost, and performance are the design drivers

  6. Top Level Functional Flow Repair or Replace Vehicle arrives Vehicle preparation and inspection Transport Passengers Load Vehicle Passengers arrive Passenger processing (tickets, security, etc.) Reprocess or Turn Away Unload vehicle End of Service

  9. Concept Trades

  10. Concept Trades II • Applying small random perturbations (0-1) to the weighting factors and scores for each concept yielded similar results over 20 cases • Narrow concepts to just one air and one land concept – civil tiltrotor and electric high-speed rail (HSR) • Electric HSR has an absolute cost significantly higher than that of the tiltrotor system

  13. Future Work • More iteration through the systems engineering process – specifically working through values, requirements, and concept trades • Failure analysis • Research and analyze more cost data
